Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

Well, I was doing my normal Diesel surf this evening and found this article for the fix of the fume problem in the 03 trucks.

Give this a read and see if it makes sense to you guys..

Sounds like he could be on to something. I basically went the same route he did, extend breather tube, tape of cowl etc.

Never though to continue looking....

Will try that over the weekend and let everyone know.

Thanks J-eh

Or if you just wait it will go away. Have 27,000 miles on mine and haven't smelled it for a long time, even after oil changes.

Only time it does it is when it snows now and I let it run for awhile in the mornings, if you don't clean the snow off the cowl vent.

Check your oil level.....mine was overfull after the first change........drained out a quart.......now 1/4 inch below full and smell not half as bad...........the smell is from the engine breather tube and extra oil sloshing around in there makes it worse........

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these holes are in there for a reason. They look to me like there used as heat extractors for the engine compartment. If you close them off, the heat has no easy way to exit the engine compartment! It is very common to extract the heat via the cowl. I think I would rather deal with a little smell than deal with the extra heat in the engine and turbo!

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

When you design the engine compartment, the flow of the air is supposed to be directed down through the bottom and out around the transmission/oil pan area. The engine vapours are NOT supposed to be vented to the passenger compartment or the heater system. This could cause Death if certain conditions are met, IE.. STuck in a snowbank and the exhaust happend to leak from the turbo area.

Also during driving conditions, there is a positive pressure area under the vent cowl, so the flow during driving is inward toward the engine not out as the underhood pressure is less than the front of the windshield. (AKA Cowl induction).

These areas of open space to the heater inlet is dangerous IMHO and should be a recall item under the NHSTA.

You know...I've seen lots of posts about this...but I've never seen anyone say they took it into the dealer to get it fixed. Surely someone has....what did they say/do about it??
