Converting to longbed and making storm chasing truck.

ok check it out

I wanna put a flat bed on my truck, but i don't want a flatbed for a shortbed truck.

so if i put a long flatbed on the truck i'm gonna want to strecth the wheelbase a little so it doesn't look funky.

instead of cutting the frame and adding a section, why not just add a sleeve at the end of the frame and just relocate the spring hangers...they have to relocate the front spring hangers anyway, the way longbedmegacab does it.

and i'm not putting a stock bed back on it, just gonna be a flatbed.

now that i think about it why don't they just do it like that to begin with?

I haven't looked at the frame but if it isn't flat and there is a hump for the rear axle then I guess that would be why. Add a bigger fuel tank while you're at it.

oh yeah...my truck has about 10" of lift on 46" tires, so clearance is no issue for me...frame clearance

I thought about the 'stretch' to longbed with my Mega Cab.

I figure right now I have a bed that is 6-1/2 ft long by effectively 4' wide between the wheel wells, a long bed is 8' long by the same 4' between the wheel wells. So, 6.5 x 4 ='s 26 sq ft, vrs 8' x 4 ='s 32 sq ft.

IF I upgraded to a dually wheel setup, added a dually shortbed I would have 6-1/2 ft long x 8' wide which ="s 52 sq ft - that's 20 sq ft more than a long bed can hold. Effectively my long bed would be comprised by the same amount of sq ft if I put a toolbox up front. Cu ft would be greater as well, no wheel wells to take out cu ft of space.

I am going to do the stretch on my truck. the proper way is to cut the frame just under the rear of the cab before it makes the bend.

That's a long way for your dingo to jump.

(Don't all flatbeds come standard with a dingo/blue heeler/border collie??)

haha, i dunno..

i just want a flat bed for tire clearance reasons, and i wanna put some tool boxes on it and throw whatever i want up there...i know this sounds crazy but i kinda want to make it a storm chasing truck. might put some rockwells under it so i can tow pretty much anything...rockwells come with 6.72 gears.

nice rig. Nice saw too. Looks like an 880 sthil with a 40" bar or so. More pics of your rig as it looks sweet. And more info on the lift.
