Chrome/painted grille question
Chrome/painted grille question
I really like the look of the grilles that have the chrome crosshair, but the surrounding part is painted body color. My grille is all chrome. Has anyone ever painted an existing chrome one? I still want to keep the crosshair chrome though.
I`ve seen it done , but as an auto painter myself , I can`t see how it would stick for long.....
I think I have the grille you`re looking for up in the attic....it`s a factory grille that I took off a truck from work , that had a crack in it. I repaired it and repainted it , but never put it on my truck.

I have a 2003 Larme with a chrome inside and black outer! I will trade even for a good all chrome! It has just been re painted and comes with a black pinated bug deflector! Let me know if you are interested!dbtrucker@aol.com
Thanks,
Derek,
I'll have to think about that. I'm assuming that I could just do a little sanding on the painted ones you guys have and recoat with my body color and it would be fine vs. prepping and painting the chrome one I have.
I drove it today and my trans is acting up, so I gotta figure out what the heck the issues is there before I do anything to dress it up or make 'er quicker!

I wouldn't mess with painting chrome. I'd just buy brand new oem SL black parts - grille shell, or grill inserts (whichever you want paint matched) - from dodgeparts.com and spray em. New inserts are under a $100. Don't know how much a shell would be but probably not more than a $100. You could sand chrome but probably wouldnt be able to get the nooks and crannies good enough and it'd end up peeling eventually.

Well, trying not to be pushy! I believe your truck is blck right? My truck is black and the grill shell was just painted and it's chrome on the inside! I am looking for a full chrome one! Just let me know!
It's possible to paint over the chrome. You just really need to get most of the chrome off down to the plastic. Now if you can't get it down to the plastic, then your best option is to rough the chrome coating as much as possible without over doing it and causing lines. Also if you can find a good plastic primer, then your factory color paint might stick good. The primers and paints that are made for plastic really adhere good to the plastic and will give you a great base to paint your factory color over. I have used Krylon Fusion Paints and Primers to paint many custom grilles for customers. Never had one complaint and they always turn out great.
