Check Engine Light

First time post.

Truck has less than 650 miles on it, and I have had the check engine light come on twice already. First time was two start ups after installing a new aftermarket locking fuel cap. Service dept. at dealer said that the aftermarket cap was the culpret. The sprial threads on the cap fit the filler neck fine, but it would not seal properly which tripped the light. I exchanged the cap with a Mopar locking cap, and the code was cleared. The check engine light lit up again yesterday two start ups after fueling up the tank. A three week interval between the first light. Haven't been to dealer yet to find out what why it tripped.
Only reason I can think of is that I topped off the tank all the way to the top of the filler neck with fuel. Has anyone experienced the check engine light coming on due to overfilling the tank?
Love the truck other than this hickup.

welcome to DTR Keith. Unfortunately you are going to the local dealer which i wont name. I am just across the water from you in the shipyard. here's the procedure for checking your codes. or you can drive up to the house and we can have a get together and look at it ourselves.

turn your key on and off 3 times, then back to on. watch your odometer, it will read the codes that set the light. they will be something like this
p0191.

it will always have the p, but the 4 digits will be different from the example. just write down what they are and post it here. then we shall see if their fuel cap theory is correct. once you post the results, i'll paste a link to the page with the code descriptions on them for future reference.

Chris,
Thanks for fast reply. Will get back with the code# ASAP. Purchased truck from Tacoma Dodge, and have a good working relationship with service dept. there. Problem getting across the bridge is worse than service dept.

yeah i understand. better than dealing with brem dodge though. even if you like going to them, you are still welcome to come on up to the house for BBQ and truck time.

To answer your question about "overfilling" the tank, no, I don't think that's the culprit. Unless, of course, your truck, whatever the year, and my '04 are different. I have Dave Kelly's vent kit on my truck and regularly fill it until fuel is standing in the neck. On my '04, the kit adds three or four gallons of useable capacity. Once I actually put 37.2 gallons in my 34 gallon tank. That was at a Flyin' J in Rapid City, SD.

I don't believe your CEL has anything to do with the fuel cap. As far as I know, the 3rd Gen diesels don't use a vapor recovery system for the fuel tank, so it's not the emissions control that is causing the CEL to come on. I've never had any CEL issues with either the OEM fuel cap, or the Mopar locking cap that I replaced it with about three years ago. Regardless of how much fuel is in the tank, or which cap you use, there are two barbs on top of the tank which should be connected to vent tubes and be open to the atmosphere. Even if you fill to the neck, the vents should release any vacuum in the tank as the engine consumes fuel.

As tomm posted, do the key trick to read any codes from the odometer. Hopefully that will give you a more precise area to focus on!

Hmmmm, I never realized that there was a way to read the pcodes using the key/odometer. However, of possible interest, I purchased my truck in April and since taking possession I began to experience check engine lights that would eventully clear on their own. In Oct while on a trip towing my 5vr the check engine light came on but never cleared. I took it into my dealer, who checked and told me it was, as I recall, a p191 or something very close but I may be mistaken. In any case they said that there was a service advisory to resolve the issue via a ECM reflash. Since the reflash I have not received any check engine lights.

Thanks tomm for that list of codes! I just printed it out to keep in my truck if I ever need them.
