Are California Truck emissions different?

Are the emissions requirements for a California diesel truck different than a truck sold in the rest of the US? I am considering a new diesel and have found several in California at a decent price, but I wonder what effect, if any, the emissions package for CA will have on performance.

Any help..........?

California trucks are SO's(Standard Output) trucks, they came from the factory with 235hp(at least the 03's did anyways).

There are a couple of differences between SO and HO trucks, SO trucks don't have oil coolers for the pistons(I beleive it's called that). I beleive they also used a 10.5 differential in the SO's and a 11.5 in the HO trucks, I could be wrong on that though. There are a couple of other things that im sure some one can chime in aswell.

So, if it says this:

"5.9-Liter HO Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine"

Then it should be the same no matter where it is sold?

The 04.5 and up are all 50 state legal. The California trucks have some type of paperwork stating that they meet Cali emissions certification but otherwise are the same truck, nothing different that anyone has ever posted. They just have the specific Cali sticker. Unless you live in California it wouldn't matter. I am under the impression that the 08 Dodges even meet the 2010 emissions requirements.

Are you talking about new or used trucks?

Bob4X4 says there is a difference in software, which makes sense to me. Is this difference enough to make a CA truck less desirable or not? Does it cause a significant loss of power or drivability?

stop guessing and take a look on the valve cover...it will tell you how many horse it is....that or get the engine number from them and call Cummins and they can give you some information about the truck.

I heard the SO are 5 speeds? HO are 6 speeds? Any truth to that?

Every vehicle sold in California has to be California certified.

Before '04.5 the SO was the only one available in California. HOs were federal engines with the 305/555 engine and no cat. SOs were available in Cali and had the 235 HP engines with a cat. This is for the 3rd gens, before '03 there were other differences too. Some second gens have cats and some don't.

From '04.5 on they were all HO and 50 state legal. There may be a hidden software difference, I don't know, but they all had the same power for each model year and are available everywhere. The ones sold in Cali have the Cali cert. It may be nothing more than a sticker. When I bought mine I wanted the HO and no cat so I went to Nevada.

It would be interesting to find out the Cali models had different programming. That might be why there are some mileage differences. For example, a friend of mine with a 6.0 got a letter from the Cali DMV saying he could not renew his registration until he got a software update on his truck. So he went to Ford and got it done and his truck lost 3 MPG!

It could also be camshaft profile, if there is a difference.

Those days are gone all 5.9s 04.5 and up are HO's all the same hp and torque.
I don't have any specifics on the software diffs, they feel the same driving and the hp and torque ratings are the same, but diff part#s.
