Buying one, I hope, but question about service

Hello All,

Hope this is the right place to ask but I am looking at an '03 and have the VIN ( 3D7KU28CX3G858282 )and CarFax report. The CarFax is showing one owner (good?) but a lot of "Vehicle Service" from a dealership entries at the following mileages: 4681, 8186, 10735, 14649, 17585, 21044, 24695, 28571, 32459, 37233, 49698, 54000, 55660, and 58404. The truck now has about 64000 miles on it. All the entries are at the same dealership (it looks like the dealer that sold the truck). I was thinking that a lot of the services might have been routine oil changes but don't know. Some of the visits were pretty close together and I don't want to buy someone else's problem.

Any insight or comments are greatly appreciated since this is my first diesel... and first time buying a vehicle with out actually seeing and driving it.

Paul

Looks to me like someone doing routine service at fairly regular intervals. Started out about 4000 to 5000 then pretty much stayed at 4000. I would see if you can get the dealers where service was performed and check the specific history to make sure. Normally the Cummins goes 3-7000 miles between oil changes with no problems. The newer 04.5 and up are 7000/15000 between service intervals, a little longer. The first being heavy service the second light service.

Why would a simple oil change at a dealership show up on a carfax report? I'd be leary and ask about it.

Why wouldn't it, it is still a recorded service done by the dealer.

I'd get the dealers number, and give them a jingle. Tell them you are looking into buying the truck and just want to know what services its been in for. They should be able to pull it up on the computer and tell you likety split. The mileage intervals do look like its been in for routine maintence. If so thats even better because you know its been taken care of. I would be more worried if it was in very infrequently, or in at very small mileage changes. i.e 30000, 30005 300015, that would be more indicative of a problem. But a simple call to the dealer should solve all our guessing about what the trucks been in for.

What is the difference between the '03 and '04.5 engine that allows the extended drain interval? What is the best year of the CTD? Can you order at a drive-through with the 3rd gen engines running, or is it still too loud? Someday I was thinking of purchasing an '03, but if Toyota brings a diesel to the states I'd probably get that instead.

I don't know specifically other than Cummins dictated the differences, maybe the difference in injector events between the 2 engines. Even with my 04.5 sometimes the drive in can't hear me and other times they can.
