Bigger tires =? Loss of torque?
Bigger tires =? Loss of torque?
I was wanting some input from you guys running 35's and 37's about how much torque do you think you lost on the low end and perhaps even in passing on the freeway?
I have 3.73 tires but realize the cummins has gobs of tq already.
I dont do much towing but when i do its around 6000#s give or take a ton.
I have done the math on the different tire sizes and what the effective ratio would be after the increase but that doesnt reflect actual owner input. So any pics and references from towing, MPG, acceleration, would all be appreciated.
Thanks
Barrett

These trucks have so much torque if your only gonna pull 6000lbs I wouldn't worry about it. I've been running 315s and now 37s and truck is fine. Hurt my gas mileage when I lifted truck though. My best guess if your gonna put a bigger tire on your probably gonna lose 1-2 mpgs at least. It also depends on how much bigger your gonna go up in size. Tire weight jumps up considerably when you go bigger and bigger.
Alltork,
I actually had your truck in mind when asking about the 37's.. i saw pics on another sight talking about 37's not tall enough..lol.
Is the MPG loss calculated after compensating for the larger tire diameter? Did you have the dealer do the adjustment? What kind of 37's are you running now and would they fit with just the 4.5" lift or is a body lift nessecary?
Sorry for all the questions i just want to be as well informed as possible before i commit to such a potentially expensive purchase.
Thanks for the help

With my stock tires and no EZ box I could beat my friends 01 2500 which is set up similar to mine from the factory. With the 315s he can beat me now and he still has stock tires. Once I hook the box up I am quicker again... His truck seems unusually quick though. His truck was quicker than my 98.5 24V which had an EZ box...It's hard to calculate an actual number in torque loss but just figure that my 4:10s are now 3:73s.
