Battery replacement- how to

Have to change both batteries in 05 2500. Batteries sit in box- no handles on battery. any trick or method of grabbing battery to remove? Or is a tool needed to grab the battery?

Thanks

I replaced mine..2? years ago, same truck. I dont remember using or thinking i needed any special tools. They are heavy, yes. A stool beside the wheel and one foot on the fender for leverage i think was how i did it.

Disconnect ground cables on both batteries first. Remove all battery holddown bolts. They do make battery carry tools any auto parts store stocks them. Or do what I do in a pinch, large pair of vice grips. Clamp on to battery post, just be careful not to short across the battery posts.

DO NOT lift batteries by the posts, that can cause internal problems.

I lift by posts only when replacing the battery, you are right it will damage battery. So don't lift by posts if you will be re-using battery.

top tool lifts by posts
bottom tool does not

Another tip that might help to keep the cables out of the way and make sure they don't touch the wrong thing, is to zip tie them off in safe locations. It gives you more room to wrangle those heavy batteries out.

Also, if it's the stock battery tray, don't forget to remove the small wedge at the base of the battery first. Otherwise, that dude is not gonna budge.
