Just noticed last night, outside temp was about 32 deg F (I live in Utah) at about 6:30 PM last night, so let the grid warm up, fire up the truck everythings fine, so I yell for the wife to get her edit outside and I look at the battery gauge and it's moving back and forth, down to about 8 volts then to about 15 volts. I thought nothing of it, thought maybe it was the battery charging up, and from what I have read thats probably what it is, but on the way home from dinner it did it again. Is there a good explination?

My truck is a 07 2500 CTD, QC, SB, no mods

It's just the grid cycling. Not a problem. It's normal.

Don't be surprised if you see your headlights going bright to dim as it cycles as well. I also had no idea what it was, but have learned from this site it also was the grid cycling.

I just took mine to the dealer for a blown speaker and this exact thing. Here in S. Cal. it got really cold! 45 Degrees!

They told me is turning on some heaters for the engine and its normal. As you can tell I didn't listen to well. Two seperate machanics told me its normal, after that it was in one ear and out the other.

My cabin lights and headlights dim.

 

2 things to remember.... it should go away with a couple of minutes, and it will go away when you are driving over 20 mph. If it still does it....there could be another problem, but you are probably fine.

 

Its the grid heaters cycling. These trucks dont have glow plugs but instead use a heater in the intake tract that will warm incoming air. You can see the heater block at the bottom of the airhorn in this picture.

Sweet, thanx for all the replies, yea it goes like this. Turn key till little red light goes out, start truck, battery gauge goes to 10 volts or right below (Lights dim), few seconds later. . . to 14 volts. . . few seconds later lights dim, battery gauge goes to 10, then back to 14, it only does it twice, but I noticed it as I was impaitently waiting for the wife to drag her out of the house, had the lights on and noticed them dimming, then saw the battery gauge go down, which is why I thought maybe someting was wrong, I figured it was the grid cycling but needed to make 100% sure it wasn't a problem with the truck.

You guys are a real help, I appreciate all the help I have received thus far, and will remain an active member of this sight.

Oh btw I paid $3.13 for diesel last night. . . .

It is reccomended for a reason............the truck will crank before the light goes out, but I can tell you......they don't waste time and money engineering stuff you don't need. The ONLY time I don't wait for the Wait to Start lamp to go off is when it is above 65 or so, or I have had the engine running very recently.
