Ball joints

You guy's are gonna love this, I brought my 06 into the dealer 6 weeks ago for all 4 ball joints, (31k on the truck), they had the truck for 3 days, then called and said all set. I pick up the truck and head back to work, as I pull in I hear this loud squeaking noise while turning the steering wheel, it is continuous from bump stop to bump stop, so I pull it in the shop and jack up the front to check it out, sure enough it was all four ball joints, sounded like there was not a drop of lube in them. So i call the dealer and let him know so we can get it back in, meen while, after a couple of days of driving the squeaking stops so I call and cancel my appt at the dealer. Well after a few weeks (822 miles to be exact), I feel a knocking in the front end and a rattle when going over bumps, so I jack up and shake down the front end and guess what I find? All four ball joints were absolutely shot, they had more play in them then the ones the dealer replaced originally, . It is going back in next week.

By the way, my dealer has been excellent to me and this is not a slam toward them, it is simply poor quality parts that they have to use for warranty repairs, I will post the outcome after the they redo it.

I have just over 30k on my 06...I have a squeaking noise when I turn the wheel sharp (not extremely loud but noticeable) and I too feel a vibration...knock in the peddle under deceleration. Maybe I should have my ball joints checked out??

Thumbs up Carli ball joints.

When everybody's over the warranty limit, consider Carli's new uppers for 3rd gens. I've seen them and they are definitely the last one's you'll ever need. Pricey, but you're done.

Tim,
Just a question...sorry no useful information!

Is that a 4x4 or 2x4?

My truck has just under 30,000 miles on it and there is noticable play in the upper ball joints. Should I take it in under warranty or replace them myself?

2006 2500 4x4 BTW.

Yep, I had the Carli's put on last week. I may never look at another ball joint thread again.

I would do them my self if you can. The dealer will just put in the same junk parts, do it wrong, and your truck will be down for days. If you trust your dealer to do a good job buy good greeseable ball joints and have them install them. Just food for thought...

What about the lower ball joints? They carry all the weight... uppers are basically floating king pins.

If the uppers start to wear then that makes the lowers start to fail sooner. W/ a good set of uppers. It will save the lowers over time. That's why they decided to make the uppers. They tend to wear quicker and start to cause problems elsewhere.
