i have a 2003 qc dually 4x4(5 speed) with a problem. after buying a used trailer and hooking it up to the stock plug on my truck for about 6 hours, my backup lights do not work. there was a blown 40 amp fuse in the engine bay,which has been replaced.no lamp out messages,bulbs look ok thru taillight lens, what could it be? the lights on the trailer did not function correctly from the start,but i never had a trailer hooked up before.

 

It might be the backup light sensor on the tranny. There is a sensor with 2 wires going to it on the side of the tranny.


Thats the way it is on the 6spd anyway, hopefully I'm not misinforming you.

just had mine fixed today. lights worked intermittenly on my 6 speed. the $.02, chinese piece of junk only lasted 20 months. and it was $36.00 on the invoice, good thing it was warranteed.

 

Same on the 5 speed. I just replaced my switch two weeks ago.

The lamp out indicator doesn't look at the reverse lights. It looks at:
1. Headlights
2. Stoplights (except high mounted stop light)
3. Turn signals

Fuse #38 on a 2004 is for the reverse lights. If the fuse is OK then check the tranny switch.

 

Basically what everyone else has said...if it is a manual, switches are common, if it is a manual then first I'm not even positive our trailer wiring has reverse to it? It may but it's just that most trailers don't have reverse lights. Anyways first step is to confirm that the fuse is OK, next is to crwl under truck and disconnect reverse switch connector, now jumper the 2 terminals with a wire, paper clip, cotter pin, etc. Crawl back out and turn the key to the on position...is there reverse lights now? If yes then reconnect reverse connector and see if you still do...if not then you have confirmed that switch is bad. If lights didn't come on during test then confirm you have power at the switch (test light, DVOM, etc) if so then problem is wiring related and you will have to work with an electrical diagram to work your way back to the lights.
