I'm thinking of buying these for my essentially street driven Mega 4x4 SRW 3500. I am hoping to get much better life than A/T tires and maybe better fuel milage too. I have Toyo 285 70 17 A/T's now and they will be done by 35,000 miles. Nitto shows a 285 75 17 E Dura Grappler. Any comments?

Those are what I am going to get for mine in a few months.

 

I paid $208 a tire out the door.

 

i have them on mine and love them so far. i've only got about 10k on them but they look brand new...minus the cansting tabs.

If you plan to go offroad at all, wet grass, mud, etc., I would avoid these and go for more of an AT tire. I do alot of highway driving but with attending field trials i do tend to go offroad a bit and these tires are not made to handle it and spin. You'd be better off looking at something like the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo. I got almost 80k miles out of that set and when I switched to these I thought I'd get the same. Even with the pressure dropped, normal rotation schedule, I'll be lucky to see 25k miles.

I'll probably go back to the Revo tire after these are done.

Again my experiences are mine...I know this tire gets alot of satisfied ratings from the guys on here...but I'm not one of them.

 

So far I think mine are pretty good in deep snow. Haven't had them in mud yet, but they should do pretty good because they are a narrower tire.

I had BFG At's and they were lousy in mud, great in snow.

 

I have the 285/75-17s on my 1st Gen and they are great. Close to 4k load rating. Ride smooth and quiet, haul the heaviest loads, no problem. I have a little over 15k miles on them, but from the looks of them I believe I'll probably end up replacing them just due to age long before the tread is gone. If they are still making them I won't be looking for anything else when that time comes.

I like the Nitto`s better, ride, $$$, wear,loadrange handling.

I have a set of the Nitto Terras. Zero towing and the front set wore out in 30k and the rears need to be replaced at 42k now. I carry no weight either in back. So if your looking for a long life tire look else where

 

If the fronts wear out before the rears, I bet you're not rotating.

 

I have 285 / 75 17's in the dura, love them - quiet and have deep lugs, love the 4K load rating since I am not a dually.

Please do not discuss the wear rating of the terra's - I have heard some friends that did not get that great of mileage out of the terras but usually they have a pretty fat tire and the terras are more of a mud tire.

Unless you plan on going mudding on the weekends which I think is crazy with a 8lb truck, the nitto duras is a great all round tire. I have driven the truck with wet, greasy snow and found the tires to work great. I do have an extra 600 lbs due to the steel flat bed, maybe that helped some.

Tire to compare the 285 / 75 tire to any other competitor - very few in this tire size and none with the load rating. Don't let the 285 fool you, these tires are not much wider than my 265 michliens. The tire is pretty tall and skinny, narrower than typical 285 tires.

 

Oh - best price I found was goodyear which did surprise me. Normally I would buy and have the tires shipped, then work wtih a local guy to install.

I found goodyear to be almost even with discount internet prices therefore why mess around with carting tires all over the place

 

My Nitto 305-70-17s E rated are pretty much wore out at 21,000 miles and my friend has had the same bad mileage out of his. That's 99% road use and on burnouts.
