Anyone installed a block heater????

I just bought a used 06 Mega Cab that didn't have the optional block heater installed. Even though I live in TN, sometimes in comes in handy. Dealer said the part cost about $36 and another $35 or so to install. Would like to save the extra money if I knew what it would take for me to do the work.

Its got the block heater it just dosen't have the cord.Use the SEARCH function on this site for reading about the issue.Cord can be bought at a Cummin store for less the half the dealer price. It just plugs in and needs to be routed.Might get one at NAPA or you can buy at the Dodge store.

the cords have a special end with a screw in flange. Super easy to do. Worst part about it is finding the routing for the cord and that is easy.

I got the Dodge OEM cable. I comes with plastic sheathing, clips, and a plug cover so it fits like it came from the factory. Not sure the Cummins cord is the correct length with the clips, etc. JMO. For $15 more it was worth it to me.

I just bought my cable from Cummins directly. It was $22.50 + tax. I removed the air duct between the filter box and the turbo and it was super easy to install. I ty-wraped it to the ground cable from the engine to the battery and routed it around the filter box and draped it over the bulkhead and it hangs right behind the grill on the passenger side. Makes it easy to get to and there's no chafing or binding.

Bought my cable on E-bay, $25 to my door in Canada, pobably less shipping for you in the US. The local Chrysler dealer wanted $100 for the same thing!
Here's a link E-bay

Did the cable come with routing diagram or just use best judgement?

Thanks for the info guys. I'll place an order.

its easy. plug it in, drop it down. it should have the little plastic tab things spaced properly. just route it towards the front of the truck on the inside of the frame(i think) and it tucks up where it needs to be with the plastic deals. kinda hard to mess up!!

i have an 06 and didnt have one! the blocks come with the heater element, just not the cord. maybe thats what they were talking about. dont bother looking all over the place. go straight to where the pic shows it to be and if its there, trace it out. if not, then that answers your question.

The Mopar cord has clips around the cord that push into holes on the inside of the frame rail. Feel for the holes as you are lying on the cold garage floor for the routing. The clips around the cord don't move easily. Three clips and three frame holes IIRC. Not as hard as it sounds...just the cold floor!

Do you have a web address for getting these parts from Cummins, if I have to order one?
