Any body remove cat from their "600"
Was wandering if it would be worth the time to remove the CAT or hollow it out. If anybody has done it did you notice a difference in EGT's and power. Also, if you did do it, did you just do the cat, or put an exhaust system on as well. Not sure which muffler I want to get yet but I have been wanting to try taking the cat off for now, just don't want to do it if I will be wasting my time since I am not sure how restrictive it is. Thanks for any input
I would like to know if it makes a diference in millage. I would imagine that it is primaraly responsible for the bad milage of the 600's. The service manager at my dealer just keeps saying that the bad milage is becuase of the 20 extra horsepower. I dont think the 20 horse is going to cost 5 mpg.
Removing the cat
In an old thread I started in the 3rd generation ram - engine and drivetrain forum entitled "Silencer Ring," the user i-bleed-disel said he took the cat off his 2004.5. I replied and asked for more info but it seems he never revisited the thread. I guess you could pm him and get some more onfo.
ok, gutted my cat today. Don't have a gauge to tell if it lowered egt's but, I did notice a little difference in get up and go, it is louder under acceleration(outside), and a little better throttle response, don't know about mileage yet. Playing around, I left the exhaust off and drove it around a little bit, and as soon as I get the money I am putting a system on here. It made a big difference. Also, i-bleed-disel got back with me, he said his egts were lowered and it is faster, didn't say anything about mileage, he also put a 5" system on when he did it

It is honey comb. I should have taken pics, but did't. I left it on attached to the down pipe from the turbo, I did not plan to, but I could not get it off and did not want to cut slits in it like I had to on the other end. I took a piece off 1" round tubing and drove it through the center then started around the outside. It broke in pretty big chunks and i reached in, not very far, and pulled the chunks out. After doing this for about an hour. I started it up and shook it around and it blew all of the little pieces I could not get my hands on out. i was actually suprised is wan't stuck to the sides, as soon as a chunk from the center was removed the pieces collapsed. Oh yeah, when the truck is running and you go to shake the pipe, lay away from the exhaust. I looked like casper the first time I shook it around
. It would probably be easier if you take it all the way off. I messed with it for about 20 minutes shaking the heck out of it and I could not get it off
. Probably not the best description, but if you need to feel free to ask any more questions Oh yeah, I still have the pieces if you would like pics of that. Let me know

The way I usually gut cats is by taking them completely off the truck, banging the outside of them very hard with a hammer, then running a 1" dia., 16" long auger kit through the center. Do that a couple of times, and everything breaks up and falls apart.
I would have taken it all the way off, but I got impatient after twenty minutes. Hitting the outside did not seem to work, Itried it as well to break up some stuff. Oh, well I am just glad it is gutted. Smells like a diesel should now too
