I just picked up my '03 dually and drove it 200 miles home from the dealer. The computer showed 14.5 MPG. Of course, I varied the speed a lot and exited/entered the highway a lot on this trip to break in the engine. There are now 400 miles on the odometer as the dealer got the truck in a trade so it started at 216.

The overhead console is crap. I got 19.2 last fillup for around town. I usually get about 18 to 19 on interstate running 80mph.

If you are really getting that mileage that's ok for that girlie transmission.

I just did a 600 km trip, cruise was set at 120 km. A little bit of traffic meant I had to get onit ince and a while and slowed once in a while. My computer says 14.8 mpg. This is ussuall for my truck.

I gave the computer numbers because I haven't had a chance to hit a gas station to fuel up since I got the truck home. It was 10:00 pm by the time I got home Saturday and my usual station was closed.

Calculating at the pump, I get 17-18 in the city and 20-21 on the highway with the cruise set on 70. This is running empty 95% of the time.

For those using the computer to estimate mileage, mine typically shows about 16 in the city and about 19 on the highway. It has consistantly been between 1 and 2 MPG low since the day I got it. :

Oh yeah...this is with a little over 10,000 miles on the truck....but it's really been about the same since the day I got it.

I would expect your truck to get pretty good mileage since it is 2WD, short box, and SRW.

The original poster is looking for mileage numbers from those with 4x4 duallys.

Not sure I qualify here either, but overall, my short 4x4 2500 6-shooter gets about the same as Sittenbull's and Jack's truck. I've been reading these posts on this site for a couple of years now, and it seems that the dooley part of 4x4's doesn't really hurt mpg's as much as some folks want to believe.

In short trips on the highway when I could maintain a moderate pace (ie near the speed limit) the overhead rises to 20+, but I rarely ever travel that slow around here without getting run over.

Re:All 03/04 Dually 4 x 4 curious about MPG

For what is worth, I have an 03 2500 4X4 with 373 (11.5) gears and 48RE. I get around 17.5 to 19 in mixed driving and 20 highway empty. Average between 65 and 75 MPH. I have 6300 on the clock. This is hand calculated and not the trip computer. As everyone else has stated, my trip computer get 1 to 1.5 less than my manual method.

It's pretty typical of what you will see. A 3500 DRW will probably get less due to the extra weight and lower gears if so equipped. But not by much.

Just my .02 worth.

I guess I best be takin' mine in for a check-up. I've been averaging 12.6 at 1200 miles. By the way, and I hope this doesn't go to anyones head, I've learned a whole lot by lurking around here.

You may want to find another place to fuel up at, then check your mileage again a couple of times.

I have 5,000 miles on, 4.1 rear end, six shifter, 4x4 dually. Unloaded on the road at highway speeds (65 mph) 17.5 mpg; combination driving around town 15-16. Computer has been very very close. Luv my Rammy.

48RE Dually 4X4 QC here with 4.10's. I average about 13.5 MPG around town and about 14-15 MPG on the highway. The sticks will get better gas mileage. I wish I had the 3.73's when I'm unloaded but the 4.10's make the truck pull alot better when its loaded down, so I'll take my 13.5 MPG any day over having my tranny work overtime.
