AC compressor/Dryer
AC compressor/Dryer
Ive got a 06 and the compressor has to be replaced, but they say the clutch is all that has gone bad. Since the failure was just the clutch, does the dryer need to be replaced with the compressor...?
The clutch is replaceable with no need to open the system. When a system is opened, it's always a good idea to replace the dryer. It's the fat bottle looking thing made into the low pressure (bigger) line. it's a has a dessicant in it to catch any moisture that doesn't get evacuated when charging it.

While on this subject, would you guys replace a compressor with a leaky front bearing/seal with a rebuilt or go for a new one? And where would you buy whichever?

Go with a new one. Rebuilds can be unreliable. If you have to pay for the install twice you won't really save any money. I have had it happen a couple of times when I was a tech.

I replace the compressor. Often when the clutch coil assy fails it creates a ton of heat. Not a good environment for the front seal. BTW the price of the compressors has come down quite a bit.
do you need a drier? Upon removing the compressor tip it and you'll find your answer. Clean clear oil.....good to go! Pretty metallic silver paint looking stuff comes out you'll need that drier plus a few more things.
