600 4x4 short bed owners - are there any good ones?

The 70mph vibration, the fuel mileage, the rough ride and other misc. items seem to have plagued this particular version of truck the most.
Is that because this is the most popular configuration or is it for some other reason.
Are any of you with this configuration happy with your purchase?
Would you do it again? If not, what would you do different?

Happy with mine. I wouldn't call my 70+ issue really even a vibration. To me, it seems like the engine/drivetrain is a little louder at 70+ than below it. I will probably take it in for a fix before I pull the boat to Tahoe this summer but it hasn't really bothered me.
I am not upset with the mileage issue. I am averaging about 14.5 City and 16.5 Highway with 1,650 miles on the clock. I only live 5 miles from work and don't use my truck for my job. I only fill up once every 2-3 weeks and I certainly didn't buy the CTD for fuel economy. Now, if this truck doesn't pull my boat like an Alaskan Husky sled dog, then I will be upset and like a little girl.
I will let you know on that one.

Neil,
I joined this board to post to this question. First Dodge, or for that matter, Chrysler product I've owned in my 50 plus years. First American vehicle in almost 10 years. Mine is a short bed 4X4 in addition to what is in the sig.
Mileage, hand calc, has been slightly over 16MPG split 50/50 hwy city. Pretty close to the overhead reading. No vibrations, funny smells or leaks. As far as fit and finish, it will stand against any M-B or BMW my wife has owned in the last 12 years. Simply lowered the tire pressures to get a better unloaded ride. Delivered with 60/70 front to rear. Max towing pressure by the manual. 50/60 is a better ride. Total miles under 1500 , so I expect mileage to improve. If not, still not bad for a 31/2 ton chunck of metal.
I drove several of the Ford SD's, GM DMAX's, and then a Dodge. Started out to buy a Chevy, but liked the turning radius and overall steering and handling of the Dodge. Also hard to argue against the simplicity and reputation of the Cummins I-6. Although some of my reasons were subjective, I'm the one who had to write the check.

I love my truck. This past weekend was the first long hiway trip. I ran 75 mph dead into a 25 mph head wind in West Texas and averaged 15+ with the AC on. On the return trip with the wind at my back I averaged almost 18. All these are hand calculations. I don't have any vibration or funny smells. I've filled up 3 times since I bought the truck and over all all around mpg is 14+ with most of that city driving. I am a little disappointed in the fuel mileage but I'm sure that will improve with time.
Great stuff, guys! Keep 'em coming.
BTW, I was browsing thedieselstop.com (Ford version of this site) and it appears that the mileage you guys are reporting is right in line with what they're getting with the 6.0. Maybe it isn't up to the older CTDs, but it doesn't look like the Fords are any better.
There's one guy with a Ford on his second replacement vehicle (that would be his THIRD truck) having oil leak problems. That's what I call staying power.
My dad had a saying . . . "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." I'm not I'm allowed to print what he would have said about fooling me a third time . . .

1300 miles, so far so good. Fuel milage has been all over the place. First tank 15.5 mpg with a lot of mixed driveing. second 13.2 all 8 mile one way with almost no town driving. third 18.2 all blacktop at 60-65. Love the truck for the most part. I wish I could get this Cummins in a GMC Crew Cab. Then I would be in heaven. Im one that bought the truck for the motor and am putting up with the rest.

I've got the 70mph vibes, and the poor milage with mine... But I don't notice anything wrong with the ride or handling. It's a little stiffer on some bumps, yet plusher on others when compared to my '99 1/2 ton. Seems to buck a little on the small abrupt ones, but soaks up the big dippers really well. Conering and steering are great on this truck.
Having said all that, if I had to do it all over again, I would buy one with a 6spd and the longbed. The manual tranny would be chosen for more control, and hopefully more MPG's, and the longbed for more room, as well as hopefully not having the bad vibes. The vibes are what really bother me about this truck

Put several hundred miles on the truck and then headed east from Northern California with a 3,000 lb. utility trailer. Now via DC-Syracuse-Boston-Syracuse-DC-Grand Rapids, MI, I have over 5,000 miles and really like the truck. No problems at this point and acceptable mileage.
Really enjoy the stick shift and the EB. Would do it all over again just like we did it.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but I would listen harder for the vibration on my test drive. Regarding the fuel mileage issue, I traded in a V10 SuperDuty Crewcab with 315's, anything in the double digits is a bonus as far as I'm concerned, I've got about 1500 miles on the 600 right now, and I'm averaging about 16 mpg, so I'm pretty pleased, but I'd obviously be happier with the 18-21 mpg I keep hearing about from 305/555 owners.
Don't be too disappointed, you have to remember a lot of people on this site are looking for answers to problems. A happy customer tells one person about it, an unhappy customer tells ten, I think some of that logic applies here. When you get on this site I think you are looking at a small percentage of CTD owners. They all have their respective problems, at least these are relatively minor and you get one heck of a warranty too.
Squidward, I'd like to have one of those 18-21MPG trucks too, I can't get more than 16 with a tail wind. 'course I drive it like a race car. A red light is just the beginning of another race.
I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!!

My first tank was 13.4 second was 16.1 and hopefully will keep increasing. This is my 4th Dodge quad cab short box 4x4 and wouldn't change. I think the ride is great for a big 2500 4x4.
I do have a little vib at 70 but I'm sure they will come out with a fix shortly.
Would I do it again? IN A HEARTBEAT !
