so im a first gen guy and i posted a poll about all the generations of cummins trucks in the first gen forum but people say its biased, so here i am! IF money was NO OBJECT and you could have any generation truck BRAND NEW... which would it be? 1st gen? 2nd gen? 3rd? i mean brand new like it just rolled off the factory floor. i would pick a brand new first gen over anything else. so what about you?
Since the 3rd gen is the only thing I've owned, I'd probably stick with it. A buddy of mine has a second gen (1996) with 240K miles, another buddy uses a second gen (2000) as a repo truck, it has over 340K miles. I do like the interior in the third gen better than theirs, and the 06+ front end design. Mechanically I don't have enough experience to form a proper opinion.

They are all great trucks, for different reasons. We're lucky enough to have a 1st and an '07. The new truck is great for creature comforts and long trips with the family. The 1st Gen is my toy and just plain fun to play with and tool around in. It is the workhorse, gets better mileage and will out pull and out run the '07 all day long. But it rides like a buckboard, the wife refuses to drive it and it only carrys three passengers tops.
Just depends on what you need it for, I guess.

Give me a 1g 4-door body, on a 3g drivetrain, and 3g interior...
I love the looks of the old trucks and alot tougher bodies, but they ride like a log wagon, and they don't have any interior space or well thought out storage. Give me a 3g drivetrain (maybe swap the axles for dana's), it's nice to be able to mod a 3g truck and still make it driveable daily by turning up or down the power with a button or switch while driving.
Nothing against the 2g trucks, but they are the "in-between" child of the bunch... I don't think many would disagree that the next generation truck is an overall improvement of the previous version... Sure I like the sound and simplicity of a 12V; but come on, I liked the sound of a flat head engine, or an odd fire 225 v-6, but that doesn't make it a good canidate for this day and age...
So can I make that my decision??? 1g/3g clone = 1.5g
actually I guess it would be more like a 2.5g since there is more 3 then 1...

looks like the poll's are holding true.... those who have a 3rd gen mostly love it... those who have or had both a 1st,2nd & 3rd gen love them both for there differences... They each stand out in different aspects of a persons life...
I own a third gen and like it ALOT but if I could somehow have a NEW first gen I'd trade. They are a simpler design and aren't as effected by alternate fuels such as bio diesel and WMO....the first gen's will burn almost anything!....oh and they actually sound like a diesel.
There is extra power to be had pretty cheap with the first gen's too.
