If I could buy my 92' new then I would, and definitely get it in a 5 speed instead. Or a 98' 12v 5speed 4X4 LWB, that would be a nice truck. Can't say I don't love my 06 though. Overall, I think it would be the 1st Gen, there's just something about them that the other truck's don't carry.

I'll do it a little differently...can I get a 3rd Gen with a 2nd Gen powertain? The full four doors are great, the interior is better laid out with more space, the dash doesn't squeek (man I HATED that), the headlights are better (though still not great) and the NVH is greatly improved. I miss the soul of the mechanical injection Cummins though...almost as if it had a life of its own. There's something about the rattle of of my '02 that just sounded like a fine-tuned watch. I certainly miss it, but the wife doesn't, and the kids demand a bigger cab.

all things considered, my 04.5 is the best I've owned. Sure, lift pump issues need to be addressed, but the ride is better and much quieter. Add to that a much larger set of rear doors, and it makes for a great tow rig.

To think I almost stuck with another gen 2...

Getting almost 25mpg and having this much power is **** near criminal!

When my truck wears out, I'll put take the engine and put it in an old (mid-50's) pickup for a weekend cruiser.

I am absolutely in love with my 04.5 3rd gen. Its the only diesel I've owned, but its the first vehicle I am still enamoured with after almost 5 years of ownership.
The Day I bought it:

I'm always amused at these polls and the comments. Several comments about buying a 1st gen if they could and how much they are missed. Well you can buy a 1st gen truck. For the money you've spent on your 3rd gen you can find a very nice 1st gen. Hmmmmmmm,,,,,,, wonder why no one does??? Hmmmmmm.......
