Tow package update

I bought a 2005 on Wed of last week. Part of the deal is that they instal the tow package. I know this thing has the little piggy tail 4 prong wire. Question is. are the wires there for the 7 prong plug or will I have to wire it up for it? Next, what are all of the prongs for. I know the trailer brakes are in there, Is there a hook up under the dash or will I have to wire it all the way back? So If My truck did not come with the tow group, what will I have to add?

Man what a buy. I felt great about buying this truck! I had to haggel a little, OK alot. I got them to throw in the towing package, Well today when I pulled in, I showed my salesman the window sticker (I keep all of mine) where the truck came off of the line with Chrome steel wheels (the truck had plain steel wheels, no prob) They orederd them for me at no cost and will install them when they come in. I like this truck more and more each day.

My '05 tow package came with four and seven pole plugs installed. I haven't really looked, but it should be a plug n' play proposition. Most likely snaps into the factory harness near the rear bumper.

NO there is alot more that comes in the Tow Package. An extra tranny cooler, an extra power steering cooler, and the most important 7plug wiring harness. As far as the dealer installing the 7plug wiring harness make sure they wire it correctly all the way back to the bumper and to the blue plug under the dash. You need that to plug the brake controller into.

I do not belive there is any extra coolers with the tow package. There maybe a tranny cooler for the gasser but the cummins comes with the tranny cooler. You will get the reciever and the 7 plug and the brake controler with the tow package. You can go to dodge web site and look.

For my MY there's overlap between the tow package and the engine upgrade.
I don't remember if they priced it that way... The only things above what I got with the HO-CTD option were the 7-pin bumper plug and the 2" receiver.

Check out the Engine option list on the Dodge site to see...

Based on my old Dakota and what others have said about 1500's... the wiring harness has a 4 pin flat at the bumper and a brake control wire (unterminated) that runs to the firewall where there's a connector for a brake controller. That has power/ground brake pedal switch and brake control out (to the rear bumper). My tow package has both a 4 pin flat and the 7 pin. Also the 7 pin has a 12V lead - not sure if you get that w/o tow package.

My 05 had the 7pin wired and mounted in the bumper. The 4pin was wired and coiled under the bumper. If it aint there then someone screwed up.

one more question

Ok. I have the 4 pin under the bumper. they installed the 7 pin in the bumper. They pluged in the 7 pin with a 4 wire plug and left the other wires tied up under the truck bed. I looked under my dash and found a 6 blade blue connector under the E-brake ped. It is attached to the big wire connector to the left side. Is this the connection I want, and if so where are the other wires that should be at the back. Or do I have to run new wires from the front?

if it is hooked up right you dont have to run any wires to the back.Did you get the plug that connects under the dash for the brake controler?

From your discription of how the 7 pin plug was wired, I do not think adding the brake controller is going to do anything. The 7 pin plug should have all 7 wires hooked up with no extra wires just tied up under the bed. It sounds like they just wired your new 7 pin plug to the existing 4 wire plug under the truck which only has leads for ground, running lights, and brake lights/turn signals. The three other wires to the 7 pin should be(if I remember correctly) the trailer brakes, switched hot and constant hot.

Yes that is what the dealer did, But with what I paid for the Truck, I will not beg them for more.
They did hook the 4 wires to the 7 wire plug. What I need to know is where is the plug under the dash for the brake controle. My truck did not come with the tow group, but I am trying to find out if the wireing for the brake controle is there or not.
