2 WD and bigger tires ????

Do we have a tire expert in here???

The outside edge of my tires are wearing horribly (285/70/17). I have had the truck aligned 3 times in 16k miles. he tires were not NEW when I put them on my 05 but they were in PRISTINE condition. I am wondering if this is a function of the type tire I am running BFG ATKO . I just wanted some answers before I ordered new tires.
Thanks!

I am far from a tire expert. But I have owned those same tires in a different size though and didn't have any unusual wear problem with them.

What kind of air pressure are you running?
I'm not an expert but where are you having the alignments done? Dealer, retail tire chain? Try to find a alignment shop that specializes in aftermarket suspensions, offset rims, wider tires, etc. They can fine tune rather than go by the factory specs.

I am using a good alignment shop! They are local to my area. The first time I went it was a young guy and he sent me to another one of their shops to have some one with more "wisdom" look at it.
This "WISE" guy had my truck up on the rack for 2 hours. HE looked and looked and looked then drove it around several times and looked some more!
I run 65 to 70 in the front tires. I have gone as high as 80 in the front to try and stop the wear! (Yes I know those tires say only 65psi )
I just don't want to put $1000.00 in tires to have them worn like this in another 18,000 miles!

I wonder if running them on my 03 4wd first had something to do with the wear?

How often are you rotating the tires?
Excessive wear on the outside usually means too much camber or toe in. But it could also be the tires.
But if the alignment shop has it dialed in right on the money just rotate the tires more often to get some tire life.

You're doing all the right things so it must be the tires. Next set try tires that less open block tread pattern on the outer edge.

Might also want to look at the Cooper Discoverer ATRs.

I have heard I would only get about 30k out of the Cooper's!

Have you heard different? The Cooper tire place quoted me Toyo AT's!

I really like the GOODyear SilentArmor. But I was told they were unavailable indefinately due to the goodyear steel mill being on strike! FREAKING UNIONS!

I thought the Cooper ATRs is a good mileage tire. You might be thinking of the Cooper SST.
