15K miles and ONLY 14.4 MPG!!!

Pencil figured, and I'm real sad. Overhead read 16.4.

Bone stock and I do not use any additives.

Should I be using additives? If so, what is recommended for So. Cal climate and to NOT void warranty. I know of the benefits of lubrication, but will it increase mileage? I still have not broken-in the 500 miles of towing (only 200). I will be running the remaining 300 towing miles in December. My driving has been 90% city/country. 50 mile RT for work daily.

I do hear a ticking/clattering noise when started in morning - goes away after 5-10 minutes of warming up. Still can hear a little of it even after warmed up. Can't rember if it was present when new.

Thanks!

Mine ticks a bit when its cold, so does my brothers. Additives that are "reputable" and are lubricators can't hurt as far as I've seen with 3 diesels. In fact I used stanadyne with my 6.5 Chevys, and as long as i used them my injector pumps were fine( I think those #@%^@1! pumps were built by stanadyne??) Those who didn't use a conditioner went through pumps like crazy. A long time diesel mechanic friend of mine recommends a conditioner EVERY fill. I've been using Marvel Mystery Oil and sometimes power service, and it seems to have picked up my mpg a bit. However, I think my truck is finally breaking in as well. I made 19mpg from new. Now, if I drive 55-60mph (which is really hard) I make about 23mpg if there is little wind, and relatively flat road.

i don't know about you-but after the nozzle "clicks off" saying my tank is full- if i have another ten minutes- i can get another 5-6 gallons in my tank, if i sit there and wait for the diesel to stop foaming. that is where the fuel tank vet mod comes into play- this may play into your mileage numbers

I filled it the same way last two fill ups. May be off by no more than a gallon.

I fill mine all the way up into the filler everytime. Which has only been twice so far since I just got the truck. But I used to w/ my old truck all the time and it played a big difference in my mileage. I just hand calculated my last tank and it was 15.78 and I had under a thousand miles on the truck. The overhead computer was saying 14.5... I used "premium diesel" this time w/ some Power Service so we'll see if there's any difference. It has been cold here too, so there will probably be some more idling time...

Don't feel bad, after a tank up of 25 gallons having driven 340 miles gave me about the same mileage as you, I have free flowing mods, used additive, have the reflashed comp had the quad box on level 2 and 210 miles of the drive was highway, 2k rpm the other 120 miles was around town. I don't know what to think/ do........ the only thing I can think of is that somehow my tire resize, and changes to make the mph correct arent spot on and I went further than I did but "mapquest" trip miles to the PA breakfast said 105 miles each way and that was real close. Darn that auto tranny.... 23,000 miles on the truck so far waitn for the break in to take effect oh well,

EDIT: this trip was also empty, nothin but a storage box w/ about 250 lbs in the bed, & me in the drivers seat.........

I feel with ya mik my 04.5 has the same fuel issues. I just printed off the TSB 18-037-04 which deals with engines built between 12/10/2003 and 8/17/2004 with a engine serial number between 57130285 and 57246361. It is stated to improved fuel economy by 1mpg, reduces white smoke on cold starts, and accuracy of fuel economy calculations. I will call the local Dodge Dealer Monday to see when I can get in. My milage is a little better than yours around 17's empty but not as high as it should be. I post my findings after the TSB has been completed.

I have a 05 2500 373 rear 6speed. I have 9600 miles and getting around 20mpg. I lost the kitty and put 5" exhaust and air intake. I think the cats is what is messing everyones fuel milage up

Your gas mileage rocks for a auto. I am ashamed to even mention mine.
Agreed. And I HAD the reflash, about 1 year ago. All it did was make my over head more inaccurate (used to read with 0.2, now reads 1-1.5 high). THe flash is worth it though, because it GREATLY improved the shifting of the 48RE.

When you say "lost the kitty" are you referring to the catalytic converter? I thought the 05's didnt have one.

The 04.

The 04.5 and up came from Dodge with cats on them. However they have a huge tendancy to fall off the truck after about 1k miles.

What kind of warranty issues will there be with the cat gone?? I'd love to do it, but still have 2 years to go with 3 year warranty!!!
