06 Does something very ackward

I got a question? Maybe someone can help me out with. When driving at speeds above 40 MPH, with all the windows rolled up, while cruising down the road if I roll down just one of my back windows, the cab starts vibrating very roughly and there is a load popping, thumping noise. It hurts your ears and you can feel the the popping, thumping in your chest like a mortar being fired off. When I roll down the front window it does not do this. If I have both back windows rolled down it is hardly noticable. I went for a ride in a 2004 2500 and my buddies truck with one window down in the back makes this noise but not a bad as my truck and it didn't vibrate. My whole cab violently shakes and has the very loud and popping sound. I am thinking that it is the aero-dyanamics of the truck since 06 models changed the front end of the truck compared to the 04 & 05's. My truck rides fine with all the windows up, or all my windows down, or just the front windows down. It's just if one of my back windows is down, that it does this. What do you guys think? My solution is I'll just keep both my windows in the back rolled up.

This is very common among many vehicle types. The air passing by the window sets up a resonance which is what you hear and feel. Its like being inside a whistle (low frequency). Anything that breaks to resonance. like cracking another window, will stop the noise/buffeting. Opening sunroofs a crack often has the same effect. I'm guessing that the size of the cabin as well as arodynamics affect the resonance. Your solution is one usually recommended by the car companies.

This is why I don't do convertibles, Sunroofs, and T-tops. I have had a few and they never were out or down. Only useful at slow speeds or ya get the buffeting crap. Hurts my ears.

Most of the time you can quiet the buffeting down by opening another window. This reduces the pressure in the cabin and eliminates the resonance. If you have the rear window, open it. It will stop the noise.

Yup! Normal. If you look in your owner's manual there is a section pertaining to this subject..

i like all 4 windows down, and the slider open.

that is awesome, pretty quiet, and cool air flowing in from the slider.

the majority of air is coming in the slider for some reason, try that if you want windows down.

a tonneau may change it some (have on one mine)

Yeah, it's irritating! I either have the AC on or both back windows cracked about 6 inches and the rear slider open. That way I don't get the irritating wind noise in my ear and it creates a nice breeze in the truck!

Same with mine.. buffets like painfully with the one open.... problem is with a wide open exhaust, I like to hear the thing, so the need to open the window exists. Two windows give me the chance to hear both the turbo (thanks to the airaid) and the exhaust.... But yes, the resonance thudding makes for a painful experience, and with one window open, it is the only thing heard.

The sunroof in mine actually keeps this from happening. I wasn't sold on the Sunroof at first and almost passed on the truck because it had one, I'm now glad it has it. When the sunroof's vent open, and the back slider open, it creates a nice quite draft from the front of the truck to the rear. No buffering at all. It's quite nice really

The Helicopter Effect

Believe it or not my owners manual talks about this and calls it the helicopter effect.

And all this time I've been wasting fuel trying to get away from the aliens that were following me.
