***Buying a NEW 2007 5.9 or 6.7 ????***
I am about to buy a NEW 07' and I have heard debates from local friends, but I NEED to know from the Pro's whats a better setup????
I am going to ad a programmer of some sort and exhaust and CAI...
I know stuff is limited for the 6.7 , but I hear the Tranny is better. I don't want another 6spd manual, tired of rowing the boat...

So I am also comparing AUTO trannys as well...
6spd auto V.S. 4spd auto
Please let me know what yall think, but back up your opinions don't just say "get the 5.9 its just better"....
I trust the 5.9 its tried and true, but times are a changing!!!!

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can get a 5.9 new out of a dealership anymore... i think the cutover in the assembly plant was 01/07.
I have a 5.9 with the 6 speed manual... I love it.
I am personally a manual tranny kind of guy, but i would lean towards the 6 speed auto if i was getting a slush box.

Here in Daytona area, the big dealer has over 55 trucks that are 07, and 40 of them are 5.9's ( the average buyer wanted the new bigger engine over the lowly 5.9.) So if you want a 5.9 look at dealer stock, as they do have them and I'm sure that if they are on floorplan they are willing to deal.
if you are wanting to put a programmer on it the day you get it and are only after power, then get the 5.9 unless you can wait a while for some better accessories to come out for the 6.7. In the end i think the 6.7 will be the better motor and put down a lot more power, when ppl get the DPF deletes figured out... only time will tell
Tranny wise, i think the new 6spd auto is light years ahead of the 48RE. The 48re is a good tranny, but the 6sp has it beat hands down. Not to mention if you tow at all, the 6.7 comes with the exhaust brake...
For me it was a no brainer b/c im not looking to add a programmer anytime soon.

I went from an 04 handshaker to the 6.7 6-speed auto and I love it. I have had no real issues with it about 4 cel for p245a, once was the techs fault. I now have all the updated software. The only thing I miss is the mileage.
MY VOTE 6.7

I just bought a 2007 with 5.9 and 4 speed......got 18.27 mpg on a road trip yesterday.....hand calculated...less than 1000 miles on the odo. I love it.
I liked the 6.7 but I didn't want to have to deal with the first year new engine bullcrap. I want a truck to use not to take to the dealer all the time.

The tranny seems great, but I'm with the previous poster, not too keen on getting a first year engine. You pretty much know what potential problems you are going to have with an HPCR 5.9 at this point, the 6.7 is yet to be seen. Either way though, I think you will be very happy!
I'm in the same place, and I'm looking at the 5.9s. Appriciate the gas mileage difference & reliability too much! One thing I have noticed... not all 48REs are equal. Drive a few of them and you might begin noticing that some have a bit of lugging when they shift, and the shifts aren't really tight feeling, where as others are spot on.
The 5.9s are still out there, but you might not get exactly what you want if you are picky, where with the 6.7s you can get whatever you want. A lot more mods available for the 5.9s. Somewhere back in the archives here was a good string discussing the engineering limitations to to really stacking the 6.7s for HP due to cylinder thickness & design... the poster who owned an accessory shop really seemed to know his stuff. If you want to really mod yours out, the 5.9 is probably the way to go...

The 6.7's are a new design, not so much basic engine components but with all the egr cooler and admissions stuff. If you set the engines side by side they are basically the same. A 6.7 head will bolt directly on a 5.9 block. I work for cummins I'm a production supervisor and we are still making 5.9's but they are being sold to Brazil to go in mining applications. I was talking to an engineer that does a lot of the testing on the 6.7's and he was saying they are only operating at about 40% capacity when it comes to hp and torque. When building the 5.9 it looks like a toy compared to the 6.7. The fuel lines and rail are huge compared to the 5.9. I wish we could have this engine just one year without the admissions stuff on them, theres no doubt this thing is going to make crazy horsepower with time. I think there both solid engines and with anything we will be making improvements to the 6.7 over time. But take a look at the 2003 5.9 common rails everyone said it was a huge mistake and would never work. Guess what it did. I don't think you will be sorry either way you go, the 6sp auto tranny in these new trucks is awesome but I've heard fuel mileage isn't very good with the 6.7. You probably need to write down what things are most important to you then make a decision on which one you want.

As for MPG goes, its a huge downfall with the new emmisions systems. All that is gonna take is an off road feature and TB system that should be out in a month!!!!!!
