It's held in with three plugs that need to be drilled out. Not that hard to do. Your mileage may vary on a common rail, but on my 12 valve, there has been absolutely no difference in spoolup or egt's. Truck runs identical with or without the ring. It is noisier, obviously, but I also have an open air element and perhaps the factory '09 intake system would muffle the extra noise.

Here's a pic with it removed. It's quite large, and leaves a heck of a void. This pic shows the wheel tips extend quite far into the intake area. Extended tip technology?

doing it on a VGT degrades from the efficiency of the turbo. want it louder then do a cold air such as S&B.

Not trying to argue cbrahs, but can you point me towards evidence that removing the silencer degrades efficiency? I had well over 3k miles with the ring in and nearly 2k with it out. I fill at the same station and drive the same roads every day. Mileage is within a few percent tank to tank, hand calculated every time, and boost/drive press/pyro read the same empty or loaded both with and without the ring. The absolute only difference I notice is noise. Perhaps the common rail electronics 'see' a difference and therefore change up fueling parameters and that, of course, is outside my realm of knowledge. Just curious more than anything

On the non-VGT turbos, the silencer ring just covers the outer shroud, where the MWE groove recirculates it around back into the compressor inlet. That pic you posted shows it removes the whole shroud, eliminating the MWE groove entirely, also exposing the blade tips on the inducer.

ETT is the exducer blade tips extend beyond base of the compressor. Non-ETT wheels, the blade tips are even with the base of the compressor.

Cummins has a technical service bulletin out pertaining to the silencer ring
here it is but i think it is more geared toward medium duty truck market ISB rather than CTD. Thought it was valid info for this thread though. Had to do with surging issue.

Thanks for the ETT schooling, Tate I'm gonna have to take a look at my setup again, maybe put the 'ring' back in and do a back to back comparison. The PDF in the above link appears to show a non-vgt type silencer ring as found in the hx-35 et-al. The vgt 'ring' is quite a substantial piece in comparison. It seems that if removing it does indeed reduce efficiency, why would it not be cast as one piece from the start?
