I know its timing.. I have not personally heard it on his truck yet so I don't know how bad of rattling it really is. And being a new motor design and all I figured Id ask really quick.
true timing will get ya better mileage but to much can be a bad thing your motor will actually be drawing fuel in to early (before the piston is top dead center) which will try and push the piston back down and break stuff up pretty bad. He may need to play with the CATCHER software some and turn the timing back it has option 1-4
That is the same setting I run on mine, sw5 and it is my favorite. not too little and not too much just enough to have fun with and not tear everything up. I leave all the other parameters default.

The advanced timing will cause higher peak pressures and if with high amounts of fuel, cause head gasket failures but not the damage reported here. Diesel fuel needs heat and pressure to fire, so ultimately if you inject too early, you really only get poor combustion and poor performance. Typical timing would be as early as 25° BTDC for high performance VP44 timing maps and as low as 6° for retardation for emissions control.
I hear alot of "clatter" reports for the Smarty.. I guess these persons haven't had a 12V or a VP44 24V engine? Advanced timing is the ticket for the 6.7 as the factory tune retards the timing hugely to lower the Peak Firing Pressures and keep the NOX down. The slight clatter I hear is really minor IMHO compared to my 12V and now sounds more like a diesel engine instead of a gasser with a few dirty injectors.

Im not chubby (though i could probably stand to do a few more situps each day), but I have noticed a solid 1.0-1.2mpg gain over stock programming with the smarty on SW3, TQ-default, TM-3, RP-default. This is with a 60/40 mix highway/city. On my normal route with a 5" TBE (obviously DPF deleted) and EGR delete and stock programming, I would typically yield 17.0-17.3mpg each week. Since the Smarty, I haven't had a tank fall below 18.0mpg and my normal route (bobtail) is typically 18.1-18.5mpg. I haven't had an opportunity to test the pure highway efficiency yet, though after 3000 miles of the daily grind with the Smarty, I think it's safe to say my increase is legitimate. Keep in mind that I have NEVER seen any kind of fuel economy increase with any kind of programmer before the Smarty. I have run the Power Pup, the Juice w/Attitude, the PMT, and the Extreme PowerPuck at one time or another on this '08 and haven't seen a lick of fuel economy increase with any of them. I'm pretty impressed with the Smarty thus far, though I haven't been over SW3 and doubt I ever will. I am the anti-hotrodder, at least in my 8000lbs. pickup truck.
I've got a 3000 mile trailer-pulling trip to make next Wednesday. The trailer will only have a motorcycle on it for the way up to Ohio, but will have a '71 Impala (my brother's latest toy) for the trip back. I intend to post my fuel log of the trip upon my return. I will also have another trip to take immediately after, this one only 900 miles or so, with the trailer empty for half of it but with an old '79 Ford pickup of my fathers for the trip back. I intend to also post the results of this trip. Hopefully the Smarty impresses me as much with the trailer behind the truck as she does bobtail.
