new truck question bout 6.7
new truck question bout 6.7
Hi, I am new to the diesel world some what. I bought an 06 5.9l. My brother is looking to get a new 6.7. He only drives about 12miles round trip a day. My question is for him. Would that short of a trip cause premature wear on the engine, cause its not really warming up and by the time it would he has to shut it down. Will it be more harm than good? And before i forget. He will be running without a load when he drives to work. Thank you all for the help.

Short tripping a new era diesel with emissions controls in place do not like the short trips and usually cause problems with soot buildup in the engine and other related problems. If he were to "modify" the emissions equipment, it would be less of an issue.
Unless one really needed a diesel and that provided the only capability, I would stick with gas for many reasons.
If you just want the fun factor of a diesel then delete the emmisions to protect your investment.

In my side business I was short tripping for about a year, I had many "catalyst full" messages and I was REALLY P/O'd at having to randomly drive on the highway for 45 minutes to clear the dpf out (lets see... how much money was I making while driving around, burning huge amounts of non-renewable fuel for the regen process, oh yea, NONE!!!). If you don't care about the warranty, do the deletes and have a happy 6.7.
Like mega-engr said, if you don't NEED a diesel to pull loads, get a gasser, you will be much happier. Now if you use it to pull, its really hard to beat the 6.7 with the 6 speed auto and engine brake.

Now, I cant take credit for all of that info. That is a few years of trial and error, knowledge and 6.7 dedication from a bunch of good folks in here. Ive had a hand in it, but all I did was stick it all in one place.

Now, it all depends on what level you want to delete to, regarding the price. Let us know and we can get you some more info.
As far as where to buy, there is a lot of good sources on the net, but one of the best is right here on at the DTR Store, and it helps out our favorite site.
Give Lary Ellis (Top) a shout if you dont see what you want, most likely he can get it for you.

You are more than Welcome!
What are you looking to gain with your mods?
From the sound of it, being on a budget, just better economy and reliability. If that is the case Id recommend a Smarty Jr and do the California Deletes.
An Edge Insight can be added in later as your budget allows.

i do the usual town driving a fair amount of pulling here any direction you go your climbing one direction out of town 8 miles of 7 to 9 % climb nice 4 lane but its a pull if you have anything behind you main thing im after is not to have to worry about future problems sooty oil is hard on turbos exhaust plugging up you might call it preventive maint.
i would like to do away with my dpf and want to be able to change back quickly i know you have broke down the different ways to do the deletes on the 2007.5 6.7 but up north no one know how to do this alot of questions rolling around and i think were confusing each other could you break down the mega-engrs california style with parts list and guages that you would install also does the smarty jr do the deletes and ad hp if im going to spend money might as well ad some power thanks ken
Basically I have done the minimum deletes. Just the CAT-DPF delete pipe in the exhaust system (triangle flange to muffler section) and pulled the plunger in the EGR motor. Smarty S67ME loaded and thats all. To change back would be about 1 hour and some programming.
That being said, more deletes for me on the way with regard to the EGR cooler and that extra plumbing as well as the DOC cat in the downpipe.
I am running stock air intake box with a custom snorkel. Nothing whizzy there.
