EGT probe question

I read that the egr block off plates (Sinister) on the manifold are "pre-tapped" for an exhaust temp. probe. How well does that work?

I went with tapping mine into the collector above the turbo just to get a more accurate reading, but with that being said, if you put your probe at one end or the other and got an accurate infrared thermometer to check the variation from the end of the manifold to the collector at the turbo you could adjust your "safe temp" accordingly and not have to worry about drilling and tapping the manifold

I feel slightly retarded now. I've had my probe in the block off plate and just kinda guessing about actual temps... All along with a good thermometer sitting in the tool box I'm parked in front of every night lol. Great idea

I'm glad I used the temp gun... Pyro reading at 312- temp at back block off plate, 395- just before turbo 432 front plate was at 236, but air from the fan was blowing over it
Now I'm wondering how accurate my pyro really is

Pre, it's in the egr cooler block off plate on the firewall side of the manifold.

So my primblem with such a difference in temp gun reading and pyro was because I just got done driving. The cast iron manifold retains heat for a while. Shot it again yesterday morning after the truck warmed up and was getting same temp at probe and pyro read out... Still about a 40° difference between where the probe is and manifold just before turbo
