Advice on 2008 modded purchase please
Advice on 2008 modded purchase please
Hello, all. I am considering a used truck purchase and am here looking for a little guidance. The truck in question is a 2008 6.9 L manual transmission, extended cab. Details are in the included link. It is priced a couple of hundred dollars above the book price for this truck with this mileage, despite a few cosmetic flaws and tires that need replacing. My main questions concern some modifications that have been made to the truck by the previous owner:
There is an Edge performance module installed, and dangling somewhat cheesily by a Velcro attachment from the instrument panel. It seems to be functioning properly, and will give digital readouts for exhaust temp, boost, etc. on the fly (man, does it ever belch clouds of blackness when the turbo kicks in in ‘race mode 7’, where it was set when I took it for a test drive off the lot!). The exhaust has also been modified, with what looks like a 5” straight pipe back to a smallish muffler (despite this, the noise is in no way obnoxious). The diesel emissions filter and I assume NOX filters have been removed, and the check engine light is perpetually on (I assume because of the aforementioned mods). Mileage is just shy of 169K miles. Clutch is brand new but needs to be adjusted.
I am pretty sure I can get them to come down somewhat on the price, my primary concern is whether or not the performance module and exhaust mods are going to cause me headaches, or are no great cause for concern. I will not be towing or hauling anything heavy with this truck. Why, you ask, am I looking at it then? Simply put, I want a diesel pickup truck with a manual transmission and a crew cab, preferably with a full sized bed, and this is what I can find.

Here is a PDF booklet that is available for free by downloading this from the internet. Telling you what you should look for; read it over this should help in buying any used Turbo diesel truck. http://www.turbodieselregister.com/m...ersguide.phtml
Is this from a dealer or private party, advertising link was removed by the administrator. If this is from a dealer than the truck needs to conform to all existing emission laws under which the truck was built before they can sell it legally. If a private party, inset on the check engine light be fix before buying. Because the truck could be in limp mode and will not run correctly due to the emission equipment being removed and the check engine light is on.

Thanks for the feedback. It is from a dealer, but they don't seem very worried about correcting any emissions gear removed by the previous owner. They are selling 'as is' with no warranty or certification : ( I planned to get the check engine light issue resolved before agreeing to purchase one way or the other. I'll look through the buyer's guide you linked and see what else I need to ask about.

I'm with Mega, pass on it. In my experience, most trucks that have been modded like that were owned by someone younger and less prudent than ourselves and has probably been pretty hard on it. I've made a lot of changes too mine since I bought it, but it was rock stock when purchased. I won't even buy a truck thats been lifted. Especially from a dealer. I bet they got it at an auction, and have no idea what the history is. Save your money.
Here are some poor pictures... I did that several weeks ago. Not sure about the caps still.

Thanks for the warnings, all. Probably best to keep looking. On that note, if anyone knows of a 4 door manual transmission turbo diesel truck within a couple of hundred miles of Northwest Iowa, send me a PM or email.

Im just curious where your cut off is. I still feel like a kid most days. That durn calendar sure dont think so though....

Personally, I believe that if a truck shoddily modded, it was shoddily maintained and cared for.
Unless someone you trust can speak for it, Id pass.
One thing about the exhaust, when I bought my truck it had a 5"turbo back exhaust. it wasnt that bad driving around without and load but the second you put some weight behind it it got real bad. The drone would give me a headache after 30 minutes and probably caused some hearing issues for my kids.
Follow up note:
I ended up passing on the aforementioned truck in favor of a 2007 megacab/6 speed manual that had some exhaust mods but was otherwise unmolested. Very clean, only 47K miles, drives like a dream. I am very happy with this truck! Thanks all for the advice. I'm sure I'll be back here with questions : )
