Why put in a torque lock switch?

Im a mechanic and know a lil about trannys. Why would you hardwire in a torque lock switch when our torque locks automatically in 3rd or 4th by itself? If you forget about the switch sometimes and have it locked at wrong times youll do damage to the torque converter. So whats the benefit of this switch if the truck already locks it for us automatically?

its used to race. people want the converter to lock in earlier, like in 2nd gear.

Because alot of trucks here will already smoke the cars mentioned.
Its just Priceless! Now I'm just talking about the racing...Not the switch!

why would you be installing a bunch of performance parts on your truck if you think they shouldn't be raced ?

I invite you to see why you race a 1 ton truck or diesel for that matter..... http://videos.streetfire.net/uploaded/triton.htm

btw... it's not the TQ you'll ruin using a lock up switch... you'll break shafts !

851 posts and your just now asking that question... you'd think you'd have figured it out by now. Having a bad truck that can smoke a vette? Priceless.

The idea of locking the converter came about because of the sloppy/loose fluid coupling of the stock converter.
Just buy a tighter converter, let the computer lock it as it is designed.
Break shafts, damage clutches and sprags. foolish.

Typically on more stock trucks than highly modded ones it helps around .3 tenths in the 1/4 mile. When you have a heavy modded truck it does not matter as much. Thats when you need billet shafts and better tc. I run the lockup on mine to keep it from downshifting while towing, keeps the trans temp down some too. (50*) or so.

I did not put in my TC lockup switch to race or because of a loose converter.

I put it in to lock up when the tranny would not be in lockup. Like in second gear in the mountains when I'm off and on the throttle, or just rolling along at about 45 and want to eliminate any slip, or just to keep the tranny cooler.

But I never let it shift while locked, especially when I'm on the throttle. It's a nice mod that should be used wisely.

The performace mods are not just for racing. They make the truck run better and get better mileage.
