White Smoke -bad-
White Smoke -bad-
here is what i got no smoke at idle, white smoke on take off and accelerating, no smoke when cruising, a little puff of white/black smoke at start up. this all started about 3 months ago i noticed a little here and there some white smoke. so checked my turbo and it is all tight still,(been down that road) now it has just gotton crazy before with all my mods you could black out the streets now the same big clouds just completely all white. but the power is still all there and there are no harsh vibrations, and it idles fine, every now and then it has to turn over a couple of extra times before it starts the i get a big puff of white/black smoke. my stock fuel filter started to leak so i bypassed it about three weeks ago, i took the short soft hose off of the bottom of the fuel filter and ran it straight to my lift pump with an inline filter. i am not sure if that is even the right way of doing this but i can't find any diagram of our fuel system to locate what all the fuel lines to the filter house and cp3 do. the 140 hp injectors were pulled out about 10 months ago and the stock ones put back in due to a stock cp3 and two boxes plus injectors dosn't work so great. so i don't know if the injectors are the problem or my fuel line setup? but here is the kicker every 1 out of 3 start ups or so i have no white smoke all coal black just like it always has been then after a while of running maybe 45 min of better it slowlly turns back to white. if there are any questions about what i am saying or trying to say please ask because i feel like i am at a dead end(until something breaks).
thanks
eric
oh yea did i mention how embarrasing it is when everyone knows your truck when you go through town and they know you have alot of power so they always challenge you and all you got when you go by them is white smoke pouring out of your stacks. it sucks

Are you burning any oil? Are you making any oil? First thought is injector issues and if your making oil thats a simple sign but an easy check is a drb scanner gotta love common rails. If that checks out good, you could have a problem with a turbo and blown seals, or a bad head either of these two problems would cause you to burn oil.
i have noticed oil loss but i have a pretty descent oil leak around the pan. enough of a leak to spot up my tailgate pretty good in between baths every week. with my headstuds i can't imagine it being the gasket, and the turbo has got me before put i don't feel any play in or out. about 3 or so weeks ago i did get the p0201 code i think it was put i cleared it and it never came back. with tst looped out and the smarty off of the truck it is basically stock and in nuetral wot i get a small puff of white but none at all on start up or idle
anyone have any ideas to throw at me, i have been doing searches in all the forums and come up with some that are close to what i got going on but they all seem to have issues with idleing or performance lost i don't seem to
I had a somewhat similar problem. Mine would give anywhere from a quick puff of white to a 30 second cloud of white after it sat over night, but not alwayas. Every 3rd to 4th start it would just give a burb of black like normal and no white. I have never had an idling problem nor has it taken more than once to crank ever. But two things did happen to my truck before this started.
1) I was playing with the extrme tune on my Diablo Predator and blacking out every intersection in town on command.
2) I can't remember the brand, but I just ran a diesel fuel/injector cleaner.
The oil level stayed constant and never smelled like #2. On my last fill up I added 12oz of Marvel Mystery oil, and NO MORE WHITE SMOKE! It runs a little smoother and quiter now too.
Don't exactly know why it worked, but it did. From talking to my dad who is an ASE diesel master tech, it sounds like it could of happened from these possibilities:
1) The Extreme tune was over fueling and the excess fuel was seeping past the rings and getting into the oil. This fuel in the oil would cause the intermitent white smoke.
2) There could of been some dirt in an injector(s) that the MMO removed.
He also told me there are 2 types of white smoke.
1) A heavy smoke that stays close to the ground is most likely caused by an injector(s) problem.
2) A lighter smoke that quickly blows away (which I had) is most likely caused by over fueling and the extra oil seeping past the rings.
This weekend I will change my oil(which is extra black) and I will always use a bit of MMO at fill ups. I hope this can help you out a bit.
