where to mount pyro in pre turbo install?

I did a search but didnt really find an answer for the best location. People said right at the turbo, cylander 3, and rear cylanders. I know the rear runs the hottest so I think that the front 3 cylanders are out but what about at the turbo? Just looking for the best place to mount this sucker to keep dibs on the motor. If it matters I do some medium towing and have no plans for any more power than quads standard box.

I tapped my 2nd gen. pre turbo just before the manifold bolts to the turbo, and on the rear half so it moniters the rear cylinder temps. I am sure someone with more experience will chime in. hopefully with a picture.

Just remember that there is a divider between the front and rear half, so stick your fingers into the manifold when you've dropped the turbo (to seal it off from shavings dropping from the drilling/tapping operation) to find a midway point, about 1 1/2 inches up from the mounting flange. Having a right angle clutch on your drill also helps....check for clearance before you drill!

Thanks guys. That is the way I did my 12v. I was just wondering if there was merit to doing it the other ways. Unless someone chimes in different I will just do it like the other truck.

I too am interested as I just got my gauges and haven't installed them yet...in fact I was going to post the exact same question. So far it seems like 1-2" above turbo would be best, I would suspect that this would give you more of an average of the rear bank instead of mounting directly near one cylinder (#4 for example) as this would only really give you a good trend for just one cylinder...

Anyone else have any good advice before the drilling begins???

Pyro Probe

I put mine at the #3 exhaust port. The drilling and tapping are very easy in that spot. The tap handle works easy, the shavings are easy to remove and nothing to remove. Temps aren't enough different to worry about especially if you aren' towing heavy.

Thanks guys. I think I will install it like stroke this CTD but for the rear cylanders. That is the way I did my 12 valve and it seems to work good but I wanted to make sure being this pyro is going on a common rail.

So if I am looking at this right....if you were to drill and tap by #3 cyl then #4 and #6 would both have to pass by it, correct? So the only difference between down by the turbo or up higher at #3 is that one is slightly closer to the actual exhaust ports. Next question is which one is easier to both access and install? I am assuming on top by #3 but haven't actually tried accessing any of the area's yet.

And by the way thanks for the great info everyone...

The picture above showns where it should be...in the BACK HALF of the collector. It is easy to get to...a short bit in a Makita or Dewalt 14.4 volt will fit. Put your primary EGT probe there...save the top of the manifold near the 3rd cylinder for your secondary probe. There will be a 50 degree difference all the time...except idle and get as high as 150 or so at full throttle...towing or NOT.

Nope. If you tap by 3 you will get reading off of cylanders 1-3. There is a divider wall in the manifold. To get cylanders 4-6 you would need to tap the back half the manifold. The rear cylanders run hotter than the front so I am going to mount mine in the rear part of the manifold down by the turbo. To do it this way measure up 2 inches from the turbo flange at the center. Now move over 5/8" to account for the divider wall in the exhaust manifold. This is where you drill your pyro hole at.

Now I'm confused.
Cylinders are counted 1 - 6 starting from the firewall to front of truck...right??

If I installed probe next to number 3, that should be reading cylinders 3 - 6? Is there a divider between 2 and 3?

If I installed probe on flange neck going to the turbo..measure up 2 inches and moved to the firewall side, would I be reading cylinders 1 and 2, because there is a divider in the flange neck part?? If there is a divder in the flange neck going to the turbo and it is divided on left side, towards firewall, cylinders 1 and 2, and right side, towards front of truck, cylinders 3 - 6, then what is the different in mounting it next to 3 verses on the forward side of the flange neck.

somebody help me understand....I guess I need pictures of the exhaust manifold inerds

Wherever you decide to drill, the easiest way to get to it is taking off the plastic wheel well. Its like 6 or 7 bolts. Its a straight shot then. Hope this helps. I drilled mine on the rear half of the ex manifold. about an inch and a half over to the left from the one in the pic. Hope this helps
