whats too hot?

I put my Isspro EGT gauge in last night and took it out for a test drive. I kicked it around 40mph and ran it up to 100mph and the EGT's were 1250* and I don't even have my quadzilla on yet. Is this a normal temp for a stock truck, (except exhaust)? Will it even run hotter with my quadzilla on? And whats to hot?

Yes...sounds about right. The commonly accpeted limits of these trucks is up to 1350 all day...spurts above...1400-1450 even for a short period...seconds.

Quad's new box has been reported to run pretty cool for 100 hp box. I would still look into a minor exhaust mod (muffler...maybe lose the kitty or more) and an intake (Scotty's is my favorite) to help. You will see a 100 dgeree increase most likely.

My 04.5 600 stock would get to 1350* on sustained WOT. Air intake and Banks high flow muffler dropped EGTs about 75* across the board. With various boxes have seen as high as 1500* briefly. I try not to get above 1350* for more than a few seconds. Currently trying Quad Xzillaraider race version. On 100hp and 130hp sustained WOT will get 1475*-1500*.

Short bursts of 1500* plus won't hurt anything. Just don't hold it there.

You can run your hand through the flame of a candle. Hold it there and you will get burned.

Except when pulling a load into a headwind!
I learned the hard way.
Add about 500* to your pyro.

I am also curious. I would like to believe this but I know when I am at 1400*+ for very long my engine temp generally climbs quickly. I dont feel comfortable with engine temps above 220* anymore than EGTs over 1350*.

I've read on many threads that 1250 is the 'accepted' limit for sustained temps. Cummins recommends no more than 1100. I'm not sure where the real limit is, but don't want to find out. If it hits 1300 I back off... maybe I'm a big baby..

Not sure what would go first. Maybe some of the performance diesel mechanics can tell us. I would suspect that maybe the turbo first. But at some sustained high temp I assume something will melt and then full detonation. I really don't want to find out the hard way.

Don,

In your opinion...what are acceptable temps for the 305 HO?
