Speedo gets its signal from the ABS, so in a way it is the speed sensor.

the sensor in the diff IS called the speed sensor......but it does not give the Speed signal for the MPH.....it just reads wheel speed compared to the rest of the abs wheels speed sensor....

Standard trans trucks must be different.

The connector to the rear diff got ripped off in deep snow a while back. The spedo would read zero until about 20kph, then it would switch to another signal (front wheel sensors?)

There isn't a sensor on the trans that I can find.

Its a sensor for the ABS.If it goes bad you will have an ABS light on as well as the parking brake light when running.Had one go bad on my work truck and those were the symptons.

From the FSM :

P0720-LOW OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR - RPM ABOVE 15 MPH (DIESEL) (CONTINUED)
For the Transmission circuit diagram (Refer to 21 - TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE/AUTOMATIC - 48RE - SCHEMATICS
AND DIAGRAMS)
For a complete wiring diagramRefer to Section 8W
Theory of Operation
² When Monitored:
Continuously with the ignition on, engine running, and gear selector NOT in park or neutral.
² Set Condition:
This DTC will set if the vehicle speed (reported from the CAB module) is above 24 Kmh (15 mph), and the
monitored Output Shaft Speed is below 60 RPM for 2.6 seconds.

ABS MESSAGES NOT RECEIVED
For a complete wiring diagram Refer to Section 8W.
² When Monitored:
With the ignition on.
² Set Condition:
The Instrument Cluster does not receive any messages from the ABS (CAB) module for at least 5 seconds.

Speedometer readings are driven off the ABS system and have been since MY 1997. The output speed sensor monitors trans output shaft rpm's for control of the OD and other trans functions.

your right, I read some more and found this...

The PCM continually monitors the vehicle speed sensor or the Controller Anti-lock Brake (CAB) to determine the vehicle road speed. The PCM then sends the proper vehicle speed messages to the instrument

We have been told to unplug them and no more speed limiter on 03-04 trucks and it will set the abs light off. 05-07 it just threw the abs light on and still had speed limiter.
