What needs to be done to crank sensor for remote start?

As you all know im getting gauges and i have high egts. MATEGO in other thread brought up something ineteresting about crank position sensor and high egts because of retarded timing. Heres what happened..

now that i think of it. i had a remote starter installed and they were messing around with it forever. i brought it back like 6 times before i got them to remove it and give me my money back. they said something about a engine position sensor on the back of the engine that was hard to get at. they said it took the starter technician a while to bypass it or tap into it etc...Maybe this is my whole reason for high egts? wouldnt it throw a code .where is it exactly and what would he have had done to it and what did he do to mess with it and what did he do to remove it?

More then likely was throwing a silent dtc that your programmer wasn't seeing that a drb, snap on, etc. would pick up. Remote starters are hard on diesels neways.

any1? why would they have to tap into my crank sensor? The module was a Polarstart 4450 2 way remote start. What they told me is that the sensor they had trouble getting to was at the back of the engine. That wouldnt be crank sensor as its on front dampner.right?

I am not familiar with that brand. most have the option of disabling the ignition "sensing". basically, it(the system) will attempt to start the motor for a given interval. if it does not fire, it will wait and try again. with this disabled it has no way of knowing if the engine fired, so your truck simple wont start until YOU hit the button again. I have installed one on an 02 24v and it was like a viper 791xv. it has the option for the wait to start light, or a time delay before start. so you could either wireit to start when the grid heater turned off, or just give it a delay everytime it starts....say 3sec or 5sec.

In your case, it sounds like they did not know what they were doing. it is normally tapped right on the ecm, that is the easiet place to get to the wire. I believe they would have had to actually remove the sensor and "modify" the mounting holes to get the timing to adjust. Early on, this was a mod for some people, rock something. anyway, how do you know that you are having high egts? do you have the attitude removed to base this on? or is it higher than normal with the same setting? I had my turbo try to swallow a fleetgaurd air filter with 1000 miles on it, and i noticed high egts which told me something was up. it was during a rainy season, so i cant figure out how it got so dirty. anyway, dont know if i helped at all, thought i would shead some light on the remote start.

im ordering gauges in next few days here. checking out prices. (i live in canada) but you are right i have no basis of proven ground for the egt issue because im going off the attitude. once my gauges come and are installed ill see what boost and temperature i get without the edge hooked up.

I think you've said this same thing before, but can't find the thread. Why do you think remote starters are hard on diesels?

For your alarm question they tap the crank sensor and any fueling box that taps the crank sensor for timing gets messed up throwing P0016 and P0341 codes, on TST web site FAQ's it says to install a 10k resistor in series on the alarm wire to stop the codes and hiccups associated with it. This still allows the alarm to start the vehicle. If the installer wants to hook your alarm for voltage sensing instead of crank sensor it may not start/run the truck in the winter when voltage fluctuates from the grid heaters kicking on and off.

I've always gotten my tach wire from the bcm at lower left side of motor. I think it was the blue/grey wire. Not sure why they would need to use a crank sensor at the back of the motor.

Yes, I would like to know as well. I have had a Compustar 2W900FMR on my 2004 since the day after I bought the truck. It is really nice on cold days and even has a built in Turbo cool down timer.

I have NEVER had any issues with it at all.
