I really think its tailpipe related...All the sound comes from the rear end...The tip adds to it I'm sure....The tip does stick out a bit...I just havent messed with it alot...Still have my kitty...Thought about replacing it with a resonator, but I dunno....No emission testing to worry about here...Dunno if doing that would hurt performnace/economy or not

muffler

I bought the Rokk Tech replacement muffler and I just took my saws all and removed the old one and put the new one up there and used band clamps to hold it on. It moved my 6" tip up closer to the body and I like that tighter look!! It is just a hair louder than stock but no drone at all. I think the muffler was $160 plus band clamps!! Took all of 10 minutes. I have done this mod on two trucks and worked great so far!!! Also improved mpg..

PapaPerk,

You can make most any 30 inch muffler work, however the stock muffler is a low in high out design and if you use a straight thru muffler you'll have some rigging to do and it will likely put some stress on the clamps or welds you do the job with. The MBRP performance replacement muffler is designed to bolt on without any rigging and uses and "S" pipe that comes with it to keep everything aligned etc. It's made from 409 stainless like the rest of the stock system to so you won't have any electroloysis problems this winter either. The have welded hangers on them to re use the stock rubber mounts and it pretty easy to install too. We also have a cat test pipe that bolts on as well in 409 stainless. They sound great too.

Mark how does the sound of the MBRP replacement compare to stock? Is it louder? higher pitched, lower? If so very much? Thank-you. Paul

ptm600,

If you leave the cat in place it's near stock sound levels except when you floor it! If you pull the cat you'll hear more turbo whistle and a deeper tone, when you floor it it'll talk to you a little bit.

Hmmm....thanks for the info guys. I think I am sticking with stock for now. I certainly do not want drone!

I thought if there was a cheap "plug and play" muffler then I may do it. But I am not really all that excited about cutting up my perfectly fine muffler and pipe.

PapaPerk,

If you leave the cat in place the MBRP replacement muffler will be so close to stock you can't tell, pull the cat and it'll get loud enough that folks love it if they love to listen to a diesel, for some it's too loud though with the cat gone.

I did the MBRP replacement muffler from Mark with the cat test pipe. I had to put the cat back on because it was too loud while towing. Now it is perfect. Not too loud not too quite. No drone at all on mine. Install is a piece of cake, you don't have to cut your exhaust up. Worth every penny, plus the guys at DPPI are awsome to deal with. If you don't believe me just call them sometime and start asking them questions, they always take time to talk and find you answers.
