What does it take to run 13's??

I am just wondering what would it take to run mid 13's with an 06 megacab 4x4? It is an auto 48re with 3.73 on H2's with 35's. My main concern is the transmission and what I would have to do to it. My thoughts are as follows

Smarty
MP-8
FASS or Airdog
VB and TC
gauges ofcourse
What else?

Where do this generally put a 5.9 megacab?

I am trying to learn, so I appreciate the help.

Paul

Gauges and a Smarty will get you there, but a tranny and turbo will keep you there.

You might need an aftermarket lift pump too.

With Smarty, you might make it without building boost on the line.... which will help protect the tranny. Not a good idea to build boost on a stock tranny.

It will be much easier on the tranny and he probably won't need 4wd that way (which will help a little too).

He wants to be in the mid-13's though. I think my truck would run close to that now if I didn't build any boost at the line. Back when I had the stock turbo and stock sticks mine ran mid-13's with a 15-20psi launch, but that is with a tranny that could take the abuse. I'm sure you could get a few mid-13 runs out of the stock tranny, but it's day would definitely be numbered.

It's a catch 22 with the stock tranny. You really need a TC lockup switch because the TC is so loose, but using a lockup switch at 450-500hp is going to break stock shafts.

Not a chance. Just without turning my copilot on I drop 4/10ths, not building boost on the line will cost you probably 1-1.5 seconds. You would have to have at least the power to run a 12.50 to run a 13.50 without boost on the line.

That should put you there no problem. I am pretty sure that there are some people here with that steup that are running mid to low 13's.

remember....315's are woth almost 4/10ths.....ditch them while at the track.

Lose the tailgate, spare tire, anything that weigs something.

I went from a 13.1 to a 12.76 by dropping back to a 265/70/17. As well the tailgate and spare are about 150 lbs of useless weight.

I appreciate all of the help! I think the big "gray" area is what trans mods I will need. Atleast a VB and TC, that I know. It sounds like an input shaft would not be a bad idea...i am not looking to spend 5k on a built trans. Atleast not off the bat.

Thanks,

Paul

If you can do the work yourself,

TC 1300
VB 450
I/S 750
O/S 600

That is a great start @ less than 3500.00

I would say on the tranny. You must do a flexplate, T/C, VB, and at very minimum an input shaft.

x2!!

Aftermarket torque converters put more strain on the input shaft due to the fact that they don't slip when locked up and aren't mushy in fluid coupling.

The stock torque converter will actually help preserve the stock input shat. So go billet or stay with the stock converter in my opinion.

Aftermarket valvebody is a good band aid for a while because it ups the line pressure which will help preserve the clutch packs.

If you want to run 13's, IMO start with a trans right off the bat. So many guys add power and run it until the trans gives up. Then you could stuck in a situation where it goes out when you don't quite have the money to fix it or build it right, or you really need it but it's in the shop being repaired or built. Granted, 99% of people don't do it this way...and when I get my Megacab next year I probably won't either, lol.

Is there a Mega in the 13s with just a Smarty? Sounds like a long shot w/o pressure, fuel and some more air.

Mine ran 13.86's with just a tranny, Smarty, and lift pump. That was at 4500' of elevation.
