What did I damage?

Well, in a bit of stupidity, when I installed my pyro gauge back in April or May, I didnt separate the wires from the probe to the box under my dash. I separated the wires under the dash, but not under the hood for some reason. And I just realized this today So my question is did I damage the box because the wires shorted, or what else did I screw up by doing this? It worked great for about a week after the install, then would work and then Id have no reading, and it got worse until for about 2 weeks the needle hant budged at all. I separated them today after it dawned on me what I did, but still no worky. Any ideas on what to do or whats ruined?
