Wha is a Red Neck BHAF?

ON another site is saw where some guys are running what they call a red neck bhaf. Is this some kind on home made air intake? I was interested in making my on intake a filter housing but didnt have any idea how to start. So if some has some good pics or ideas it would greately be appreciated, and by the way just finished the silerencer ring and baffle removal. The turbo really is loud now. Will putting another intake make it even louder?

Do a search for BHAF on the site here - lots of good information and even a kit one of the members here sometimes (often?) provides.

So really all it is is a home made air intake. Ihave alot of crazy questions since I am new to diesels. Any opinions on the scotty air intake systems, do they filter well and like before do they make the turbo whine more noticable. One more question is a new intake worth the money over just putting a new drop in filter? Any ideas?

To answer the question about turbo whistle (which i'm a huge fan of ) yes an aftermarket intake will make it louder. Im pretty sure the BHAF does to (which for my own sake im still looking for others to chime in and see if it made theirs louder) and I did hear that the scotty didn't increase the whistle, a lot of people like that... but not to sure, we will wait for an owner with a scotty to chime in...

The "Redneck BHAF" you are referring to used plumbing pipe to replace the factory piping from the airbox to the turbo. Some of that plastic piping melted on him and that's why I wouldn't use it. I made my own intake using parts from Airflowonline.com

I gave a detailed parts list and instructions on how I did my BHAF here.

I've heard rumors that some folks didn't like it that I listed the vendors I bought my stuff from, but at least for the time being Lary has allowed the links and prices to stay.

Anyway, if you want a BHAF it may give you some kind of idea of what parts you'll need. The way I did it isn't the only way to do it, but it works for me.

Portland cement and turbo fins don't go so well together unfortunately. However, the insulating values of a concrete heat shield could definitely prove to be beneficial.

Hey thanks guys. Hoss I looked at your set up and it is great,I am thinking about doing the same thing. The afe kit is way expensive. Talking about the turbo whine I removed my baffles and silencer ring and noticed a real increase in the noise.Removing the things hopefully will not hurt the truck or void the warranty. I was going to start another thread but figure this topic has been well covered.I am going to the muffler shop tommorow. I cant decide what kind of muffler to put on or just go straight piped. I dont mind the loudness, the louder the better, but dont want the dreaded drone that you guys speak of. any ideas to what would be best.
