well i dont think the timing was an issue. i was only running timing on the tst not the smarty. i believe it was too much duration. i was holding the injector open to long spraying fuel at the wrong times of the stroke hence melting them. with single pumps you will see a rail pressure drop when that happens but dual pumps the rail pressure was always pegged. that and some valve seats dropped on the exhaust side witch dosnt help cool the pistons when there not properly working exhaust valves. everytime ive pulled my head witch is 2 times a year i always had valve seat issues. always had some loose ready to drop.

Judge, it seems you've covered all your bases and still carnage, which I'm sorry to see, as I'm sure you are as well...
Maybe you can help some of us avoid this disaster. When you're talking about your valve seats dropping, was there anyone anywhere in the past who spoke to you about using different oversized seats or staking the seats so they can't come undone?
I'm sure there's alot of guys here who'd like to know for future prevention....
Keep us informed of your 12 valve buildup, even though this is a third gen forum.

well the truck will get a 12 v transplant so it will be a 3rd gen body just a 12v motor. cummins makes oversides seats .005 and .007 over i believe. i went oversized but they still came loose. i finally just bought a brand new head and still after about 500 miles this happened. im my opinion the 03-04 heads are more prone to drop. 04.5 and up seem to hold up better but they still can fall. its high egts ( anything above 1400) and heat cycles that cause this. they expand and contract and eventually drop. this is not in written in stone just my opinion. thats why im putting in a 12 valve. even though heat will kill any motor or head the 12 valves just hold up better to it. they shouldnt on paper by design but they do. 3rd gens make big power now adays and can run with the big boys , also have the ability to push buttons to turn up or down power and control smoke on the highway but when it comes down to it they just dont seem to hold up as long as 12v 's when your above 800 hp. i still love the smooth power of a commonrail though.
