A few guesses here. Yeah I think that is why the ferds sound like they do. Pretty soon most diesels will be Vgt or small twins right from the factory. My third and most accurate guess is that I know absolutely nothing.

I had a "turbo stall" problem on a 2000 Ford Powerstroke truck a few years ago and installed a Banks variable vane impeller. I purchase it through http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com. This totally eliminated this problem and really gave the truck lots of turbo whine. I don't know if this is avalible for the Cummins.

Variable geometry turbos suck if you ask me. They do make good off the line power because there is no lag time, but the internals are what I see going wrong with them every day at work. The variable vanes are having a hard time staying freed up. They are bad about locking up in any given position. I cant say that all of them do this, but the ones we are running do. Its nota matter of if, butwhen it will happen. I have see anywhere from 1,000 miles to 250,000 miles before this happens. I wont mention the manufacture of ours, but I will say the Switzer turbos are the ones givving issues. Its just like any part of your exhaust system. After many cycles of heating up and cooling down, water and rust, things just freeze up. We have all been there.

The Holset VGT we use in all the Cummins engine have been doing very good with the exception of the controller diaphram leaks. but the Holset use a different approach by using vanes that slide in-out and restrict rather then the moving vanes that close together against each other.

That holset sounds like it would be better. We havent had issues with the diaphrams blowing, but the new EGR system causes the engine on the drivers side to get so hot that the air compressors are passing oil and allowing oil to enter into the VGT actuator valve and stop it from working. The big wigs answer for this was to install a filter inline before the valve and catch the oil. These new engines are getting out there aren't they? And to top that off, we have had ours out for about three years now and Jan of 06 we are getting a completely new one again? Oh well, I still wouldnt want a VGT on mine this early in the game. Just my opinion. Thats one of the many reasons I went with the Dodge.
