Turbo Guar/Blow off valve, when do you need one?

Hey guys,

Just curious who is running one of these "turbo guards/blow off vales" on their trucks? At what point in the performance curve does a guy "need" one, or, "should have one".

What does it sound like?

Thanks guys,

Igor.

Well I need one, I bark my II SPS66 all the time, even trying not to. If you bark your turbo just accelerating heavy and letting off then it is probably a good thing to have.

I will just try not to let off quickly or accelerate heavy through OD shift until my money tree grows or my 6 lotto numbers hit.

Even when I'm just driving around town and shift at like 2200 rpm and let off quick, the turbo makes a sound that I am assuming is what your calling a "bark." I would describe it as "turbo pressure release," and it just sounds really harsh to me. I don't necessarily mind it making the noise, it turns heads, but it almost sounds like it could be hard on my turbo. I guess I would just like some reassurance that this isn't hurting my truck. I also want a manual boost controller to complement the Smarty, so i suppose that will make it even louder and harsher?

Do a search above on the name or BOV and you will get some hits. There are quite a few that use them.... AK RAM for sure ...and he has twins...most love them. Another unique product from BD that is very good. ks

You don't need a BOV if your turbo is tough ehough to take the bark!

Igor, How's the mud this year!!! I don't know of anyone with a stock turbo using a BOV as the housing is too small to bark it only whimpers. Get a sledpuller or phatshaft and get the BOV and you will have a bombproof air supply. ks

It's funny you mention that. Some I have talked to have said the same thing. Basically that barking won't hurt a heavier shaft turbo because the direction turn is more pronounced. Can you bark your Aurora?

Barking is bad for any turbo.
It not just hard on the shaft but it is hard on the wheels.
I have had fins on the front wheel actually noticeably deform from hard use.

BOV= Pressure relief of Compressed air that is being slammed against the throttle bodie and Intake Valves during acceleration. When you let off the throttle that pressure has to go somewhere (Back through the Intake side of the Turbo) With a BOV, you relieve the pressure before it gets back to the turbo which increases the life and helps the Turbo to spool up quicker. Why? There is no air pushing back on the Compressor Blades. Trust me, all Turbo vehicles should have them. The 6speed manuals have them!! Just not really loud!

I agree that is hard on any turbo...some turbos can take more abuse than others..

I can bark the crud out of my Aurora 5000 if I want to...

It will always bark a little on Converter lock under hard accelleration.

BOV for cars are too small for our trucks. The BD unit is made to fit on our trucks. ks

Here is a thought....why cant a ported shroud compressor housing be made for the Cummins turbos like the one ATS offers for the PSD? It has veins cut into the inducer that direct the backpressure around the impeller when the turbo tries to "bark". Very effect setup...and i dont see why this cant be translated to a Holeset...

no stock diesel turbocharged engiens have them. there is no low pressure [vacuum] in the intake to signal the bov to cycle to dump the boost in the piping to keep the turbo speed up..

one could be made to work by using drive pressure as the reference source for throttle/load, but still kinda hard to make work [needs lots of tuning for all different turbo/exhaust/manifold setups]

gasser bov's come in sizes large enough to work for our engines if you could make it work [tial makes a 50mm one] or you could just use 2 of them [smaller ~30mm ones]...
