Transmission upgrades

My automatic transmission went out in the 2006 dually. I had it rebuilt and the shop installed a billet torque converter and a larger capacity pan.

I'm wanting to upgrade power now probably in the 70 to 100 HP range. What should I do to strenghten the transmission. I've heard about valve bodies and input shafts......any help is appreciated.

If all you are adding is 100hp, you should be good with the TC and have the shop turn up the line pressure a little bit.

If you're thinking about POSSIBLY doing more power in the future (which you probably will want to, after you do the first 70 hp . . . happened to me), then I'd have as much done to the tranny as you can afford the first time. I've read every post I could find on trannys and talked to as many people as I can. Doing the TC, VB, input shaft, and flex plate should be a real nice start - go billet on the rest of the shafts too if you really want to spend some more money.

What hp is a TC, VB, input shaft and flex plate good for? 550?

I think it depends more on what you're going to do with the truck than just the HP that it's putting to the ground. With a good triple disk TC, upgraded VB and billet shaft and plate I would think you'd be good to at least 550 as long as you're not sled pulling and drag racing all the time . . . but hopefully someone that actually knows what they're talking about will chip on

I am interested in the answer as well. 550 will be the max I will run with mine. Will TC/VB, billet input and flex plate hold it?

Hello,

From what I have learned you guys might be a little high at the 550 mark, but with proper driving I think it would work. It is the shock to the driveline that kills the trannies. Guys that like to slam the pedal down, have hard hitting turbo(s) and do boosted launches would make a mess even at 500hp.

I use my truck to pull and want additional power for driveability only. I never race or use full throtle. At most I'm 24K lbs.

mopar - that's what I was talking about . . . I think in general they'd be fine to that HP level if they're no doing boosted launches and slamming the pedal.

rjjr - I would think you'd be all right if you drive it sensibly - obviously keeping the truck cool and keeping the fluids cool (especially if you have an auto) would be pretty important. I think I'd look into a deep tranny pan too, as it's a pretty cheap (like 250) upgrade.
