Transmission Upgrades???!!!

I am looking to get a little more HP out of my CTD w/ the addition of maybe a propane injection system. It will give between 60 - 100 more HP. I was wondering what type of tranny upgrades do I need to make to be anble to handle the new power/torque? : I am looking into it for more of a towing capacity, rather than racing. Please help!!

James...

Re:Transmission Upgrades???!!!

Why not just put a box on it makes the same HP as propane and you only buy it once not propane every week?

Re:Transmission Upgrades???!!!

What type of box? ???Do you mean the Edge EZ? I am still looking to know what I need to do to compensate for my tranny only being rated up to 550 f-p-t. I am at 505 right now, I don't think that I have much room for improvement if I don't do something with it.

James...

Re:Transmission Upgrades???!!!

I would definatley only go to propane in the end all your power you will need can come from mechanical and electronic upgrades. ATS can get you more power but will probably try to sell you a tranny to. If your truck is stock it should be able to handle an edge EZ no probs.

As far as I know just upgrade your clutch to something over 505lb-ft . The internals of a NV5600 should be good to go as far as I've seen. It's not a wimpy transmission by any means.

OK, I have a slushbox... But I'd look into a Southbend or the like.
Maybe ATS isn't the first place to go for manual transmissions ???

I must second the notion about buying propane every week, and a box just once. I have read about lots of issues with propane on the ETH- still dunno whether this is the same for the 01.
I'd definitely go gauges-clutch- box (do it right the first time like buying a comp and leave the wire off) and then wire an injectors. Somewhere on the way you'llneed more air ( BHAF or Scotty) and a turbo.....

Hide your credit card ;D

AlpineRAM

Re:Transmission Upgrades???!!!

I pull heavy 60% of the time......11000 lbs to 18000 lbs trailers. This with 90% stock tranny....I have turned up the pressure, added an extra cooler.I have yet to slip anything.
The only problem that i have had is when i turned up the pressure, it set the truck to limp mode.....added resister....no more problems. ;D ;D
Sorry, I didn't know that ATS sold M/T clutches. I had thought that they were into autos only.
My apologies.

AlpineRAM

Does the comp come with a wire for the injectors? is that the wire to leave off? Also with the research that I had done I was under the assumption that I would only need to fill the propane tank about every 4-6 weeks. ???

Re:Transmission Upgrades???!!!

Diesel: It works like that ( simplified):

An Edge EZ will tell the VP44 some things that make it inject more than it would if just asked by the ECM. But there is a limit to how much the VP44 will inject. ( It thinks that more won't be reasonable)
Now comes the wire. This wire connects directly to the solenoid. So the limits the pump sets are avoided. This will add more power than the electronics of the VP44 will want to give you. On an Edge Comp the wire is there, but you do not need to connect it. As long as you leave the wire off it will just talk to the pump and convince it. With the wire it will just yank the control lever out of the VP44s hands.
So the box will work alone without injectors. (with or without the cable attached)
With the stock clutch I think you can get away with the comp and the wire not plugged in. Then you can buy a better clutch. ( please tell the vendor what you intend to do... don't blame him when you first lied to him and then toast the clutch)
After having a good clutch you can connect the wire. Voila! another 50-60 hp and some torque.
Well, now you will be able to put your fuel pressure gauge's needle firmly on the 0 psi mark. Nice people will offer you some upgraded fuel system. We don't want that poor engine to be thirsty, don't we ???
Now you will be looking for injectors. If you take something serious you will see on your pyro that WOT will skyrocket your EGTs.
A new turbo or twins will be next step. Oh by the way, you will need to O-ring your head then. The stock head gasket would be blown away with the boost you want to make then.
This is why I said hide your credit card.
About how much propane you will need. You could ask how much fuel will I need the next 4 weeks. It depends on how many miles and how much pressure on the accellerator....

AlpineRAM
