transmission reliability question?
transmission reliability question?
I have an 04.5 2500 with an AFE cold air intake, MBRP turbo back exaust"no cat" and a Bullydog power pup on the extreme performance tune, my question is will this kill my stock trans by running this tune, I don`t floor it I just cruise with it for better fuel economy
I would say any tuner, 60 hp is the max safe level. You could run a 200hp tune, but like you said your foot is what your running hp at.
I'd say alot of other factors fall into play like, how fresh is the fluid, how heavy do you tow, do you tow alot and how easy are you on it overall.
VB and TC are the weak points, replace those two items you could run alot more.
To extend life, I run a double deep pan, flush fresh fluid often, and monitor trans temps.
Just monitor the trans temps, keep it under 225 if possible. Empty should be under 180 rolling down the hwy. Heat is the killer of these trans, thats a unlock tc typically backing up or pulling a heavy load up a grade in 1st or 2nd. Abuse is second killer, ie. racing/fast shifting/boosted launches.

towing
I am not going to tow with this setting, I am just using it for fuel economy, I pretty much baby my truck, and my trans fluid is pretty fresh, I change it every 15,000 miles. when I tow I put the truck back to stock computer settings
Yeah you will need a tranny or some work soon enough. I got just ove 100k out of mine before she realy started slipping.
I baby mine too, that is until one of those POS coffe can muffler cars tries to get a jump on me at a light
Then I just put the hammer down and let them see my tail lights and try to figure out how that big ole truck just dusted them without even a pff of black smoke

kx,
If you drive it like you say you do, you will get 200,000 miles plus out of it. If you tow with 60 HP added and run it in the mountains at 1600 RPM, or race it or thrash it you will begin to have a problem.
It's all about you.

I have an '06, K&N Intake, MBRP 4" Cat Back, Power Pup on Extreme.
I use mine mostly with 8' slide in camper on and pull 14' trailer (5000#'s). I bought the truck in Feb '10 and have put 40k miles on it (it had 82K miles when I bought it) this past summer and my trans is about to go.

To elaborate on Raspy's advice, when he said "through the mountains at 1600 rpm" , no matter how conservative you drive, you can only control the low end torque to a certain degree. So more torque applied from the engine at lower RPM, or more stress from terrain/towing, are HUGE factors in transmission wear even in trucks with little modification.
....and in addition to what Nsomniac05 state, the fluid flow of the trans at 1500-1600 is marginal at best. Aftermarket trans/kits will address this issue, but still recommend keeping your rpms above 1500 when working it.
