trans temps driving in the city

my transmission gets up to 190*F pretty easily without being hard on it. most of my daily driving is non highway. everytime i get to a red light the temp. goes up around 10 degrees before the light turns green. if i go fast enough the temp comes back down but only til i get stopped at another red light and then it goes up again. 190*F seems pretty hot right? will this make my trany fail before it should? i this normal?

p.s.

i only run the smarty on #3, i have enough trans fluid, and the truck only has 10k miles, and it only takes about 10-20min for the trans to get to 190*F

thanx

Mine usually gets to around 165-175 in the city when its hot or lot of stop and go driving. But never see above 180* when empty driving in traffic. I do have an upgraded TC/Trans which probably helps keep my temps a little cooler, not near as much tc slip as stock.

I see temperatures like DJENSEN9367. I was in Osage Beach MO last year 95* or better pulling a #6500 boat in the city when I saw 180*, could be the transmission. But one other thing that happened later last year. My transmission temperature would really climb in the city like 190-200* , I was freaking out. I would stop and pull the dip stick, check the fluid and feel how hot the stick was. My fingers should have been smoking @ 190*. Everytime I could hold my fingers on the stick. I called Dieselmanor and found out there were some modules that were bad. He said that is what happens when the power module starts going. They calibrate the instrument, module and probe togeather. They sent me a whole new set and all is fine now.By the way I also have my sensor in the cooler line. Hopefully it's just the instrument.

I have a Dunrite 3 disc custom stall TC and and my trans builder used a Dunrite VB kit to do my build. Mine is completely rebuilt for racing, but I think the 3 disc was around $1250 and the VB kit in the $400-$500 range. Very happy with my setup. Drives and shifts like stock for normal daily driving, without any mush like stock.

It's a possibility that the gauge is wrong. When mine went out the gauge would really go crazy. Temperature would go up to 200 then down to 150 in less than a minute. Next time when the gauge shows 190, stop and feel your transmission dip stick. It won't be the temperature of your hot leg of the transmission line but it would be 150 + if your gauge was accurate. 120-150* is about the temperature you can touch for a short time but can't hold on for long periods. When mine was going crazy and showing hot, my dip stick was just warm. I had to put a sticky note over the gauge till I got the new gauge. Just yesterday my transmission was at 190 when I pulled into the garage, I was pretty heavy on the pedal getting home. But we finally got temperatures above 70 and I forgot about my cold weather front . I took it off and will let you know if it get as hot as yours. I still think my normal temperatures ar 160-170 even in the summer. maybe your radiator is all cloged up with bugs & stuff and not allowing air thru. Just some ideas.
