Towed W/Smarty level 7, EGT's 1100 & below

Hello. I had a thread going a few days ago about towing levels with the Smarty. Well, I never changed it down before leaving on my trip (Wild TM, level 7). EGT's were silly low. I was always at speed limit or a lil' above. Even on the steepest hills, I was able to keep it at 1100 degrees or less while keeping the legal speed limit or a tad faster. Now, this was up the 101 fwy from Ventura past San Luis Obispo, towards San Francisco (which is not exactly the rocky mountains). But there are some short hills that are steep, none of them more than like 90 seconds.

FYI.
Thanx.

If you're sensible it can be done. Generally lower levels are better because they are safer, but its a free world. Just be careful.

I towed a 6000 boat up to fresno and back over the grape vine I 5 -99 never saw egts over 1100 hauling **** 70-80 with smarty beta 4.4 on #7 that tune is sweet for towing and minimal smoke on high settings I think thats why they call it the towing tune!
I should not charge that hard pulling anything but sometimes I forget that Im pulling a trailer LOL.....

I towed 14-15k yesterday with Smarty on Wild #8 stacked with an XZT chip (and the 100hp sticks). No problems other than the very sensitive pedal.

When I "tune down" for towing, it is going from beta 4.4 to Aftermarket Turbo/stock injector/mod tm--- sw7 of course!!

I see the same results as posted above for egts as well, so it is consistent.

I know that area. One of those hills kept me at 45 mph due to excessive EGTs. I got cut-off at the bottom and basically started up the hill at 15 mph which didn't help, but it sucks when you have all kinds of pedal remaining that you can't use! I can't wait to try it again with Smarty JR!

Strange .... with mild tq on level 7 my truck was defueling on EGT's a lot towing only about 7K and ambient temps at about 38*F..... Could not maintain speed of 80 - 85 mph on most hills. Made me think a new turbo is in my near future. Is the Beta version that much better or maybe the 43 lbs of boost made the air rather hot going in as I do have the boost elbow from an EZ on the turbo.

Hello again. I am running the current (Dec. 13th) tune on the Mads website with the "wild" torque management. Funny, I did switch to stock for a few hours one day. It made me realize how little pedal it takes to do anything with the Smarty loaded. On stock mode, I am constantly 3/4 throttle and up (just driving around normally). When loaded, you just touch the pedal. Even going up the steepest hills at speed, hardly any throttle is required.

Thanx.

With that small stock turbo, you should not be pushing it over 32-34 psi tops... you are way out the efficiency range and blowing superheated air resulting in high egts... you need a new turbo before that one goes pop! You really are living dangerously!!

Pulled a 9% grade coming from Alaska to Illinois with a 10K lb car hauler. I hit 1250 and decided to back it off, but kept 45-50 MPH pretty easily. Of course, I lower the Smarty down to Level 3 for the pull. I guess all truck act differently, seems my temps we higher than yours? Or maybe weight and grade were more?

1250* is pretty conservative in an '06. I wouldn't of had any problem running 1350* up that grade.

How can I get this 4.4 tune?
Thanx.
