took Edge EZ off and lost 5 mpg?

Took an Edge EZ off my "new to me" CTD600, as it was the wrong freaking module(it was for the 03/04 engine), and the overhead MPG readout dropped 5 mpg hwy. I'm not about to put the wrong module back on to hand calculate the mileage - so all I have to go by is the overhead.

Question for you pros is whether or not to spend $500 for the correct module? All I am after is better mileage. Will a mod really give you at least 2 mpg increase non-towing? And was this incorrect mod "confusing" the overhead? I know overheads are not precise, but it dropped 5!!!! Last question - can these simple plug and play mods(like Edge EZ) harm your engine in any way/shorten the life?

ok let's start out here, your first question is, whether or not to spend the $$$ i would say no, if the EZ fit your truck and worked, i'd think it'd be fine and wouldn't harm anything, but others will chime in too.

second, will a mod increase MPG, YES!!, i put an ez on my truck and went from 16.5 to 18.9-19 MPG. always remember a modded truck is a happy truck .

third, can plug and play harm engine, for the most part no, especially with somehting as small an the ez, now if you had way, way, WAY more than that, then we can start talking about preparing and building up the engine.

hope i helped, if not i know there'll be more replies, and don't forget to fill out your signature so we can all see what you got at a glance, i.e. like mine below.

thanks. I talked to Edge and they said the old mod (03/04) applies to much fuel pressure for the new engine, so I took it out. Just wasn't sure whether to spend the $ on new one. I checked ebay and see used ones for around 300, and may end up buying one of those. But I don't want to if it could harm the engine - I don't want a bunch of gauges to have to watch - I only have 38K miles on the truck.

ok i c about talking to Edge.
here's what i'd do, spend the money for a new one but not an ez, get the Comp, way more funner and more options for power too.
you won't NEED all those guages to watch but the main one recommended around here as you may know is the FUEL PRESSURE i would at least recommend one guage to watch and that'd be it, IMO.

They don't make the comp for the "600" trucks, but they do make the juice wich is 5 powerlevels from 25-100hp with gauges. I'm sure your mileage went down but not 5mpg. The ez is a pressure box which will throw off you overhead to the positive, so you probably only lost about 2mpg or so. Simple plug and play mods will not harm your truck, but there have been some injector problems when using a pressure box (ie: edge ez) with 04.5+ trucks. The edge juice makes power from only timming and duration with no pressure increase.

rklaus, almost all "boxes'' will throw the overhead mileage off. You show way high with a box. Sale the EZ on the classifieds on this site and get to shopping for another module, downloader , etc. Check the classifieds here for some ideas.

You didn't lose 5 mpg. Your readout is not skewed anymore. Now it's probably closer to being accurate. EZ boxes are great for making you think your mileage has increased when in fact it has gone the other way.
If you are just looking for a moderate increase, I'd say go with a Quadzilla box. Very good prices and the boxes give you power in a much greater band then the EZ....

Do not run a 'C' version EZ on the 600. To much rail pressure at the higher settings. Probably can get away with running at level 1 or 2 though.
The pressure boxes will skew the computer calculations for the fuel economy. So hand calculate only. I did pickup a couple of mpgs with the EZ, if I'm easy on the go pedal.
