Tonneau (Sp?) Cover

What do you guys suggest in the terms of a hard tonneau cover? A truck shop near me has Covermaster E-300 series for 8 somthing. Also, ho I have to buy a lock for the tailgate or does the cover fit over the top of it?

Fold-A-Cover hard folding tonneau cover. It not only locks but alows complete use of the bed while towing a 5vr.
Check my pics to see how or go to :Fold-A-Cover

If you still want a good tailgate lock then try a Power Tailgate lock by Dyno Lock

And you spelled it right!!

I love the one with the cammed clamps. easy on and off and you can access you stuff. No holes to drill or slide caps or ancillary parts to lose. Fast and simple.
Less than $500

Terzo? I can't remember.

I bought a cover from Versacover - I think it was about $600 installed. What I really like about it is that it's really easy to remove and re-attach. The cover weighs about 50 lbs. and can be removed and re-attach (I'd still recommend 2 people because it's bulky) in about 2 minutes. It covers the top of the tailgate as well, so you don't need to buy a tailgate lock. Here's their website: http://www.versacover.com/

I put on a Pace Edwards Jack Rabbit retractable hard cover about two years ago and absolutely love it. Some truck accessory web sites offer pretty good deals on them. They run about $800 or less.

I just added the "Truxedo" on my 05. I had the same one on my 01. The one I have is the original one, not the low profile or the economy one.
Truxedo
Installs in 10 minutes and rolls out of the way when not needed.

I've been looking at this one. I like the flat looks, and it should be very light. The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger is that I'm worried about the aluminum will dent too easily. Anyone have one of these?

I looked over all the above mentioned covers. All have their advantages.

I have a Diamondback Truck Cover www.diamondbackcovers.com on order at this time. I chose it because you can load the top of the cover with an ATV or what ever else you don't mind outside the cover.

Thanks for discovering the new LT Sport Cover for us, Walt! This may be the hard tonneau cover I've been looking for: quick to take off and put back on without having to refit it every time, lightweight and painted to match. Plus it's metal at a fiberglass price! As for dent resistance, it's probably better than most of the rest of our trucks because it's a sandwich construction with high-density foam between the aluminum panels. Anyway, I did a little follow-up online research and found out they are made by New Vision Fiberglass based in Grand Forks, ND (www.pickupstuff.com). Also, www.truckaddons.com has them for $830 compared to $895. It might be time for me to pull the trigger!

Yes, Tonneau is speeled rite!

Hi Fredbert!

I suppose I should have a quick disclaimer:
I'm the guy that designed the LT Sport and the Lazer Lite covers.

I appreciate the kind things you've said about the LT Sport cover. It took me nearly 2 years to find a design that worked, but I think we nailed it.

You are correct that we are located in Grand Forks, ND. Furthermore, you have it correct that the dent resistance is superior to most body panels. I think Walt_Mink was concerned about denting in his post above?

For comparison, the Ford F-150's hood is made of .0393" (1 mm) aluminum on the exterior (at least it was on the models through 2003). Our tonneau cover exterior (we call it the "skin") is made of .062" aluminum, so it's about 58% thicker than Ford's hood on the exterior.

On the underside we use the 1mm stuff. I'll be honest and say that I haven't measured the skeleton of Ford's hood, but I imagine it's probably also 1mm. (note to self:measure F150 hood tomorrow)

I just signed up for this forum, but I'd be happy to answer any questions about the design you folks would have. I've checked the Email notification for this thread, so feel free to ask me any question you'd like.

Since I run several forums myself (Minnesota Fishing being one of them, along with about 75 other websites), I want to be very careful I do not violate the spirit of the rules here.

With that being said, if you don't like our tonneau, then let me recommend one of my competitors: Retrax. They also make a quality cover.

Thanks folks!
Scott

I bought a Snugtop for mine.. The one thing that sold me was the latch system. It closes like a regular trunk. no barrel locks.. just push and click its closed..

It also installed with no drilling and removes by takeing 2 large handled bolts out and it slides off leaving the clamped frame on so no alingment to reinstall...

A bit pricey though at about 1000.00 1,100.00 with the remote unlock and 2 key buttons.

Hi Scott, yes, I was a bit concerned with the dent resistence .... and I guess I still am (nothing against your product - I've just never seen one.) Will I be able to top load it without ruining it? I know I can put a four wheeler on top of certain fiberglass covers without killing them - how about this one?

On another note - its a very classy looking product ... I've had your site bookmarked since before I ordered my rig.

Oh yeah, another question - will the over the rail version cover most spray bedliners? How far down from the top of the bed does it go?

Thanks,
Walt_Mink

Walt...Wow that was quick!

I know that I was there when we did a VERY scientific test on the strength of the tonneau cover.

What we did is take 10 of us guys, average weight about 150 lbs., and took the tonneau cover and supported it with 4x4's around the perimeter (mimicking the truck bed) and we all got on it and stood on it to see it would collapse. Please realize, this is NASA type stuff here! The test cost us about 20 minutes of labor...which in NASA $$$ would be about 20-30 million dollars?

The tonneau cover did not fail. We left no dents. We left no creases. It held it's own.

Yes, there was some yielding due to the weight (as any good engineering project would), but there was no damage to the tonneau cover.

So my short answer is this: I can't tell you it's "ok" to do what you've suggested. Our lawyer would freak. (What if someone got hurt?) So, although I wish I could say, "go for it", I can't...because of that liability. Our tonneau cover is meant to protect your truck bed from the elements and from "thieves".

I can tell you this. If someone were to come over to my house, and I owned a 4-wheeler (preferably an Arctic Cat...but that's for another post), and they wanted me to do a careful, structured, videotaped experiment with all of the necessary safety equipment and safety requirements required by law, to see if my aformentioned 4-wheeler would not destroy the tonneau cover I have on my own truck by it's weight, I'd be happy to accomodate such an experiment. (Yeah...don't lawsuits suck?)

I'd love to have such a videotape. It might cost me about $100 for one, but I'd love one. I'd post it right on our website. But since I don't have a 4-wheeler, I'd have to look around for a 4-wheeler...

over the rail version
We don't make that version anymore. We couldn't find a market for it. We only make the XTreme flat for Dodge Ram right now.

Alright LTSport ... I'll load up my four wheeler - where do you live?

It sure sounds like the right tonneau ... too bad I have my liner sprayed so far down. Anyone ever try to take off an inch or so? Is that possible at all?
