tire size conversions....

i've been researching my options on installing a set of 22.5 wheels for my dually. i've determined that i want a lifted stance rather than a lowrider one. my question is what do the metric sizes for height actually translate into standard sizing in inches?

245= ? inches

and so on down the line....

I just completed this conversion on my 2004 2wd dually. I used 22.5 Alcoas and Hankook 255/70 22.5 tires. They have an overall diameter of 36 1/4 inches. I hope this is of some help.

I don't have the diameters for the other sizes, but the 255R 70/22.5 seem to the the optium for conversion with just a 2 inch leveling kit. I did not want my truck too high, just enough for good clearance. I will try to get some photos on in the next couple of days. Several people on here are running the 22.5's and I think most are using the 255/70's. Good luck on your conversion. Look at D. Wiggs site. He has them on his mega cab and they look sweet !!!

the 255 may be the size i will run, but upon lifting the truck, i may want a little more meat to fill the gap. i am currently considering either a 4" or 6". not wanting to go high, but just enough for a little clearance..kinda like jdearden's rig.....

the first # is the width in milimeters 255 mms

the second # the percent of the first number so .70x255= your sidewall hight but you have to multiply that by 2 because you have sidewall on top and bottom of your rim.

Then the 3rd number is obviously your rim size.

So to convert it ( I dont have a calculator in front of me so I will use a size I know) a 315/75R16 315 mms is roughly 12.5 inches wide multiplied by .75 = about 9.75 inches multiplied by 2 = about 18.5 inches plus 16 = 34.5 witch is about what most 35" tires run.

I dont know if that was exactly the answer you were lookin for but I hope it helped.

Do they offer a smaller overall diameter 22.5"?

Something closer to 35"?

Just wondering.

hey guys here is a good program that you just enter the tire size and clearance and it tells you if the new size will clear but i have to warn you it doesn't account for backspacing of new rims!

Just to help with the math.... 1mm = .03937 inch

a 265/70/17 tire is .70 x 265=185.5 x 2 =371 x .03937 = 14.6 + 17 = 31.6 inches.

Hope this helps

if a 265 tire is only 31.6 inches, how can a 255 tire equal 36 inches(approx)?

in a tire signature such as 265/70/17...is it interperted as:

265-tire height
70-tire width
17-wheel size

is this correct?

Just the opposite Darren, The first number is the tire width, the second number is the percent of width that is the sidewall height

Darren, my front tires fit well within the fender. The rears stick out about one to one and a half inches. There appears to be more space between the duals than with the stockers. I have polished aluminum on the outside and steel on the inner rear. If you get all six aluminum, the rears will stick out even more because of the thicker wheel centers. A guy on the other diesel forum had his inside aluminum wheels machined thinner so they don't stick out as much. I believe that may weaken the wheels, but I have no proof of that. I still am very happy with my setup.

z06,

great info!! why or why wouldn't you consider doing a mild suspension lift(4"-6") to accomodate the larger wheels? i understand that no lift is necessary to run your particular setup, but even a little bit of extra clearance would be nice to have right?

also, how do you like your extang bed cover? can you also post pics of that as well, when you have the chance?
